I'd like to own a rat, but their tails freak me out. Mila looks like a sweetie, by the way.

Get the rat, be thankfull it's not an opossum tail that grabs you, and is as thick as your thumb. BLAUUUCK.

It'd be interesting to see an IQ comparison between a ferret and a rat. Ferrets are pretty damned smart too. It took us about a year to finally get the cage set so that Azrael couldn't figure a way out of it. I'm just glad she doesn't have thumbs, then I'd truly be in trouble!

I used to have a bunch of tiny fuzzies as I was growing up, pretty much all of them, actually now that I really think about it. I've come to love bigger things more, but rats are still up there as pretty cool. My husband really wants to get one mostly so he can teach it to sit on his shoulder. I don't know why, but he thinks having a shoulder trained rat would be awesome. I've always been intimidated by the size of the balls on the males more so than their tails, but I can see how the tails would be disconcerting as well.

I had a shoulder trained rat. Her name was coconut. she was one of those albino types and she came from a medical testing lab. She was pretty much blind. She ended getting some kind of wierd sores on her legs. The vet tried to cure her with some solution he made up but it ended up drying out her insides as well as the lesions. I had to have her put down, she went into a seizure. I can't have any more rodents. They are too delicate.

This is my Nyaa who will be a year old in June, I saved her from an unwanted litter, I wish I could've brought the rest home but I was lucky enough to get her, the owner passed away shortly after and all her animals were taken away so my kitty was fortunate, I loves her much. This is how she stretches out regularly, I've never had a cat sprawl out like that.

And this is my baby sister's cat Sydney, he's just getting old enough to take a real interest in my cat, though she's gotten out recently and we think she may already be knocked up, but we're not sure. Oh, and it looks like he's messing part of his leg, but he was just taking a step, he didn't like the camera much, I think my flash bothered him...

Rhea looks frighteningly similar to Kaiser! I think it's the ears. I tried to find a picture where Kaiser is in a similar position, and this is the closest I've got. It's an older one when Gryffon was still a cute fuzzy puppy.

My 12 year old son, Thor. He has no clue he is actually a dog.

Years ago, I taught him to retrieve beer from the fridge. It was pretty cool for about 3 days until it became obvious that I would never be able to keep cans of beer or leftovers in there again...

And I always seem to wake up without my pillow when we are out camping...

I love this little guy.

Ferrets are very intelligent. However, ferrets do have larger brains by a long shot, and in trials have shows to be more intelligent by nature. The only issue is, they have different priorities than rats, so rats will often be used for research that involves rewards (also the fact that they are much cheaper to keep, breed, and feed).

If you are really interested in ferret studies and intellect, check out the Ferret Mailing List or the Ferret Health List, or the FHL for short, on Yahoo Groups.

When I was in Michigan I did ferret rescue for a very long time. Rest assured, ferrets are more intelligent by far. However, because of the differing priorites, it may be far quicker to train a rat to do tricks than a ferret. Ferrets just aren't as motivated by treats and food as a rat is, and they quickly tire of the same thing over and over, whereas rats will do the same thing over and over for an hour sometimes...

We had ferrets that would move laundry and stack it up to get over gates. I had one that was pulling a cord and it got stuck on the door. Now, some dogs and other animals would just keep pulling, but she stopped immeediately and went to the snag, gently pulled it off, and then went to the front of the cord and went along her way. Truly freaky.

Also I just did this because someone had to do it. LOL!
