Posted by Neophile I can tell you from my experience with the Navy (I come from a military family) most of the rank and file as well as lower ranking officers don't care if you are gay. It can be a career vulnerability though if you upset people up for other reasons. Of course if you went on TV and declared your love for your same sex partner they'd have to do something about it. But other than that I've never noticed them caring. Politicians and five stars are the only ones who have to care. That sucks though that he got deployed for the fourth time. I am sorry to hear that.

Exactly.
Even back when my father was in the air force during the 70's, the only time it mattered was if you were caught screwing in the shower by the MPs or something. If they knew, they didn't care otherwise. A gay officer/enlisted/whatever dies the same as a straight one.
