the epic tale of New Year's Eve 2008.

kelsey, kristen, eli & i set out for the train tracks

and after a session of veritable ball-room dancing
with a set of particularly nasty thorns
we came upon an industrial plant
complete with electric fence
that we were able to walk right around.
it was that ineffective.

we walked for a bit,

then we came upon
a mountain.

and when i say mountain,
i mean it-
this thing was monolithic.

it was made of gravel and chunks of asphalt, and situated in the middle of the complex, with a water-filled quarry next to it.
the thing was huge.
and quite unstable.

so, naturally, we climbed it.
that is,
eli and i did
because we're "nature kids"- his words.
i say nope, we're probably "adventure kids".

so this mountain was made of-
generally, the crumbling bits of old, defunct roads.
and aesthetically, it looked sound,
but once you're maybe halfway up
you realize that it is not a good idea to grab on to anything smaller than your head.
or else you have a mini-landslide on your hands
and suddenly there's nothing left to grab on to.

so,
it makes for a somewhat thrilling climb.
looking down from near the summit also provides for interesting feelings.
once you get close to the top, it's easy climbing from there.
and then-
well, this:

possibly the most glorious sunset i have ever seen.
it provided an opportunity for eli and i to discuss the beauty of destruction.
industry and nature juxtaposed.

kristen joined us, but kelsey was afraid of federal prison.
how silly.

the conversation turned to handguns,
and, eventually,
we left and went back to kristen's house to party.
really now.

of course, later that night,
a new group consisting of myself, eli, zack, and abby went back to the mountain.
my idea was that we'd be there at the stroke of midnight
to bring in the new year and such.

so,
some time after eleven twenty PM
(i know because we kept checking the time on our cellphones)
we once again navigated the godforsaken thorn-forest
as lights from the industrial plant guided us
(and lit up the tops of those skeletal winter trees in a wonderful manner)

we climbed up the crumbling asphalt mountain
watching the quasi-landslides falling into the dark

the gravel had a tendency to rub your hands raw,
but it was so cold that the ache gave way to a pleasant numbness once we reached the top.

at night,
we were surrounded by lights
glittering white, yellow and orange.
manmade stars
yes, the gods of industry.
i wish i could remember exactly what was said.

or perhaps i'm glad i don't, because it was the most wonderful, depressing conversation i've ever had in my life.
i do remember that we had to be quiet and stay on the dark side of the mountain, because we didn't want someone to call the police.

abby ate the candy i brought in my hoodie pocket,
because i wasn't hungry anymore.

eli threw a series of rocks at me, and said:
"i want you to respond to me."

zack started talking about how you don't have to be senile when you're older.
he's the least violent of us, i think.

sometime later,
it was decided
that on the stroke of midnight
we would scream at the top of our lungs, then run and slide down the side of the mountain before the police came.
i know. great idea, right? nothing could possibly go wrong with that.

well, you see, earlier, eli had slid down the side of the mountain with minimal physical injury, so it looked fun.

we waited.

midnight came out of nowhere.
we stood up, we screamed, we launched ourselves into the abyss.

let me explain.
the side eli had slid down earlier was rather smooth and unobstructed.
quick and easy, right?

well,
apparently,
the side we choose to slide down that night
was best described as "gnarly".
or "jagged".
or "a steep slope of jutting rocks leading to an almost vertical drop of some feet, on to more jutting rocks".

so, you see,
it HURT just a bit.
there were large sharp rocks, and a bit of tumbling.

there are still bits of gravel embedded in the palm of my hand,
and my elbow was a bit drippy.

it was somewhat unpleasant.

reaching the bottom, we could only crawl, aching, into the trees. surely someone had heard our screams, and would be coming to investigate.
we staggered away into the thorn-forest, because it wouldn't do for us to be caught on private property.

after a bit, the cold made all my lovely wounds go numb, and it was rather enjoyable.

we went to the junkyard and resumed our philosophical musings, except that now there was a completely different feel in the air.

i don't think we'd ever thought we'd come out of it unchanged.

i made a new years resolution:
- live in the real world.

...yeah, i'm working on that.
