| | | Well, I was baking sweet potatoes and was on my second batch (all in preparation for Thanksgiving). I took the batch out of the oven and set it on top so they could cool and I turned the oven off. I went thru the house making the bed and doing random shit. In the background, I heard a beeping noise and thought, that's funny - I turned it off. So I went back in and turned off the oven. But I knew something was already wrong because of the smell. So I hit the off button and it started beeping again showing two letters "ER" which I assume means error or get the fuck out before you have to go to the ER. Call my husband and am like, how the fuck do i turn this off? And he's like, I'm on my way home. Well, I notice smoke start to seep from the oven and was like, oh shit - so I opened the door to listen for the sound of gas......
When I opened the oven door, it had gotten so hot on the inside that it was melting and IT FUCKING FELL OFF. I was like, OH SHIT at that point and grabbed my baby, called 911 and got the fuck out. No flames - but the firedude said a few more minutes and it would have been a whole different story.

| | | Sounds like either a self cleaning malfunction or the valve seized open. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER open the oven door if you suspect a gas leak, the oven was very hot inside, and if there was too much gas in the oven and you opened the door, you would instantly provide a source of oxygen and kaboom. You should have gone to the source of the gas (like the basement or the garage) and manually closed a valve. If no valve exists, you should have taken some kind of wrench outside to the gas meter and turned off the valve outside. No more gas, no more heat, less likely a chance of fire. Your insurance company may demand proof of service... those appliances need to be checked / cleaned / inspected annually. Any appliance that uses gas needs to be checked every year (propane and natural gas) and includes ovens, dryers, furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, ect. It is a pain in the ass and most of us do not pay to have someone check a 'working' appliance. I'm a gas fitter and I don't even inspect my own appliances often enough.
