just found out that the governor of my great state is finalizing a plan to furlough all state employees for up to 5 days to help balance the state's budget. while furloughs are better than lay offs it still hurts. 5 days works out to a 2% paycut which while you may say that isn't that much it still hurts when you have bills to pay and a deadbeat roommate who you're on the verge of kicking out.

i guess this will give me a few extra days to explore, and it will mean that there will be some skeleton crews at some state hospitals so exploring parts of them will be a bit easier but still it's not that comforting.

ugh, anyway i'm going to go drink some more.

benefits are so-so, the only really good thing i get is a lot of time off (~25 days/yr) and they put a little bit of money into a 403b for me. the pay is meh, but it is a 40 hour work week, unlike my last job where i was working 80+ hours and usually working at least 1 day out of the weekend.

If you upgrade from a state to a federal job it gets better. The pay is good, so are the benefits, time off, and you can tell your boss to go fuck himself after you are tenured without him being able to fire you. Every day, though, sucks a little bit more of your soul out so I am not sure who is getting the better end.

There also are a lot of borderline psychopaths in government jobs, which sometimes makes things more interesting.

Yea, I would look at a federal job but I have no desire to drive into DC. There is a federal employer close to my house that would be great but I'm not sure if it will work out, plus the whole working with crazy evil geniuses and sucking the soul out of me.

At least working at a University you have your soul sucked out slower then if I was a full on state employee or a federal one.
