The union is covering both of us to go back to school for retraining. I'm not entirely sure about the strike pay up here in Canada, I'll have to dig out my collective agreement to see about that. But I'm very grateful I have a union that is helping my family and I.

That's one thing they haven't told us about. I've looked around and everything I've seen says that the company that laid off the union worker has to pay for that here. It's part of the negotiated severance package.
I'm not saying that unions aren't good, all I'm really saying is that sometimes I wonder what I pay 42.50 a month for because usually all they're good for here is getting a job back for someone who's been fired and doesn't deserve their job.
