I'm with United Steel Workers as well, Local 1005. I was laid off in Nov. of last year as was a bunch of my family. My father is also a union member of 1005. The union is covering both of us to go back to school for retraining. I'm not entirely sure about the strike pay up here in Canada, I'll have to dig out my collective agreement to see about that. But I'm very grateful I have a union that is helping my family and I.

That's one thing they haven't told us about. I've looked around and everything I've seen says that the company that laid off the union worker has to pay for that here. It's part of the negotiated severance package.

I'm not saying that unions aren't good, all I'm really saying is that sometimes I wonder what I pay 42.50 a month for because usually all they're good for here is getting a job back for someone who's been fired and doesn't deserve their job.

My mother was in the Bakery, Confectionery & Tobacco Workers Union. She started off with only playing something like 36.00 in dues but then that went up to....$110.00! Yes you heard that right!

Sounds about right. I am not too fond of unions myself and sometimes think that the only difference between working with a union and working without one is that one more person has their hand in my pocket.

It's still an odd jump for yahoo to make.
