| | | New York State only requires emissions testing in Long Island and the NYC Metro area. Here in my corner of Der Empire State, the only thing that is required is that if the car is 1996+ OBDII, it must be plugged into a computer that communicates with the state DMV. Personally, Caligula, your mechanic has to be a flaming asshole to keep fucking you on this car. There are three O2 sensors on your car, two on the exhaust manifolds and one on the downstream end of the catalytic converter. One of them is sending a faulty code. A misfire detection should lead to a flashing CHECK ENGINE light or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light, whatever Subaru runs as a fault indicator. A misfire detection usually means that there is a problem in the ignition system; plugs, wires... I'm not sure what your vintage Subie runs for ignition, whether it has a conventional distributor or runs a Distributor-less ignition (coil packs, ignition module). Usually when you have an O2 sensor failure, that trips a "HARD" code in which the car will go into Safe or Limp mode. Fuel and ignition tables go to a base and the car will run enough to get it home or to a garage, but not well enough to drive everyday. ("SOFT" codes are Check Engine Lights that are more of a nuisance than anything serious) I think you should PM Bandi... he knows Subies as well.

O2 sensor number 2 is probably shot.
Head gaskets are common. Are you sure it's ONLY #2? If it's misfiring in a pair, it's a good indication of a bad coil pack.
You need a new mechanic because you're being raped. A universal is like $90.
Again, go aftermarket.
Head/head gasket/piston skirt burned off from EGR valve/shitty spark plug/bad injector/coil pack/a million other things.
$3 at Pep Boys will fix that... go buy some new terminals.
I think you're telling a fib there...
| I've been to two mechanics with this car. The dude who did my engine, Informed me that an o2 sensor and my cat would be going soon. A month or two after that, I turn the car on and it sounded like a rocketship.. Brought it to Mieneke, It would have been abou $477 for a brand new cat,Plus the labor and everything. Or.. Cut the rotted flange off and then weld a new piece on, All for $277, Including labor and all. Since my car's inspection was due in October, I needed that as well. So, For $103 just to see if it will pas the inspection/ We put it on the machine. FAILS. Passed safety, Failed Emissions. OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Codes:P0420 Catalyst System below threshold bank 1 P0130 O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1 P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire detected
