My wonderful Subaru, Is ALWAYS giving me shit.

I finally got the cat fixed(Kind Of) It isnt noisy anymore.
The inspection is due. Has been since October.
The car passed the safety inspection, Failed emissions.
GREAT!

Three things came up.

Something about the cat.
Something about an o2 sensor.
And Cylinder two misfiring.

Cat alone is about $500(Or so I'm told)
O2 is around $200(I'm told)
Now what could possibly be wrong with cylinder two? Suggestions? Please?

Also, My battery terminals are lose, AWESOME!

No kidding, Quebec is great for that shit. I was looking into switching my Quebec plates to Ontario plates but I'm going to hold back for the longest time possible (I'm only here for 8 more months, then I can get posted ANYWHERE in Canada...). E-Test, safety, pain in the ass. I know my car does not pass the E-Test as of right now because my catalytic converter has a leak. My E brake doesn't work, so there goes the safety... Fuck it for now.

But that really sucks about your Subaru.

Oregon has emissions testing only if you live in the Portland Metro Area. Here, it has helped reduced smog big time. Most vehicles made after 1973-ish pass it anyways. Plus, its only like 15.00 and you get it knocked down to 10.00 if you do car registration renewal at the same time.

I'm glad Ohio (or my area at least) has no emissions tests. When my brother moved out to St. Louis, he had to get his car tested and it failed, needing $750-some worth of repairs to pass.

New York State only requires emissions testing in Long Island and the NYC Metro area. Here in my corner of Der Empire State, the only thing that is required is that if the car is 1996+ OBDII, it must be plugged into a computer that communicates with the state DMV.

Personally, Caligula, your mechanic has to be a flaming asshole to keep fucking you on this car.
There are three O2 sensors on your car, two on the exhaust manifolds and one on the downstream end of the catalytic converter. One of them is sending a faulty code. A misfire detection should lead to a flashing CHECK ENGINE light or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light, whatever Subaru runs as a fault indicator. A misfire detection usually means that there is a problem in the ignition system; plugs, wires... I'm not sure what your vintage Subie runs for ignition, whether it has a conventional distributor or runs a Distributor-less ignition (coil packs, ignition module).

Usually when you have an O2 sensor failure, that trips a "HARD" code in which the car will go into Safe or Limp mode. Fuel and ignition tables go to a base and the car will run enough to get it home or to a garage, but not well enough to drive everyday. ("SOFT" codes are Check Engine Lights that are more of a nuisance than anything serious)

I think you should PM Bandi... he knows Subies as well.

I HATE DRL's.... and every damn car sold in Canada since '90 or something has had them. Usually it's as easy as unplugging the DRL module at least.

Three things came up.

Something about the cat.

Do elaborate...

Something about an o2 sensor.

O2 sensor number 2 is probably shot.

And Cylinder two misfiring.

Head gaskets are common. Are you sure it's ONLY #2? If it's misfiring in a pair, it's a good indication of a bad coil pack.

Cat alone is about $500(Or so I'm told)

You need a new mechanic because you're being raped. A universal is like $90.

O2 is around $200(I'm told)

Again, go aftermarket.

Now what could possibly be wrong with cylinder two? Suggestions? Please?

Head/head gasket/piston skirt burned off from EGR valve/shitty spark plug/bad injector/coil pack/a million other things.

Also, My battery terminals are lose, AWESOME!

$3 at Pep Boys will fix that... go buy some new terminals.

I actually prefer DRLs on cars and looking to add them into my car actually.

BTW, Samarui...the car I have rented on my trip to Toronto in the summer is a Cobalt

I've been to two mechanics with this car.

The dude who did my engine, Informed me that an o2 sensor and my cat would be going soon.

A month or two after that, I turn the car on and it sounded like a rocketship..

Brought it to Mieneke, It would have been abou $477 for a brand new cat,Plus the labor and everything.

Or..

Cut the rotted flange off and then weld a new piece on, All for $277, Including labor and all.

Since my car's inspection was due in October, I needed that as well.

So, For $103 just to see if it will pas the inspection/ We put it on the machine.

FAILS.

Passed safety, Failed Emissions.

OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Codes:

P0420 Catalyst System below threshold bank 1
P0130 O2 Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire detected
