Exploring with the younger generation.

It turns out there's another UER member living near me. Yes, actually in my city, and in fact in the next suburb. He's interested in draining, and we've talked about that a bit. He seems decent enough, in as much as you can tell through this kind of interaction. The only thing is, he's only just finished high school, so he's roughly eighteen years old.

Now, to be fair, I know little about his living arrangements, so I may be wrong in assuming he has no transport, and lives with his parents. Picking up your exploring partner from their parents' place just sounds awkward. I can't help but think I'd feel somewhat more responsible for this person's safety and well-being than I might otherwise, too. "Have him home by eleven, dearie!"

It reminds me of another photographer in his early twenties with whom I once met up. When I mentioned that I had young children, he suddenly seemed to view me as an alien, and said something odd like "oh, so you just do photography to get out of the house." That was the same guy who tried to impress me by playing doof-doof music really loud from his parked, hotted-up bubble car.

Would I want to meet up with myself as a late-teenager? No, probably not.

Almost everyone I have explored with is a lot younger than me, and some were teens,I started exploring with my own daughter when she was 12. If he is of age, then no worries, if not , then maybe meet up somewhere close to his place? Its kind of one of those gut things. That and you might look like a pedo if you go pick him up at his house....or someone else might think that..oh and do his parents know he does this if he is underage?

Yeah, grown men picking up young boys is always a good look.

Good question about whether his parents are aware of what he's doing - I have no idea. The guy has already ventured into one or two drains with a friend, and has started a website, but we all know parents can't use computers.

It's also worth noting in all this that I practically never meet up with anyone from online, so I'm probably just looking for excuses in this case, too

It is a weird thing. I never thought I would hang out with so much younger than me, but I have explored with 18 year olds and had a bunch of fun with them. I didn't feel responsible for them at all.

I recently found out a friend of mine who I though was in her early thirties is 24. It confused me for a bit, but really, it is all on an individual basis.

That all being said, people who date people much younger than them freak me out. Especially if the younger party is still living at home. YUCK!

I have met a few parents of some very young folks that have explored with us. Often wondered what they must think.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

I would be more uncomfortable with looking like a sugar daddy to the neighbors. This could have the unwitting effect of causing problems for the young explorer with the parents or peers. I'm sure He'll see the logic of just meeting you at the location, as long as it's close.

As for exploring with someone younger, nothing garners more respect than keeping up, or better yet out performing the young lions you happen to be exploring with.

He sounds awesome. If I ever get down that way, can you hook me up with Dude-guy?

Yeah, I have picked up someone from his parents' house and then dropped him off at 2 am. And that guy actually went to the same school as my son.

And I have felt creepy waiting in a dorm parking lot for a young lady, with plans to take her into an abandoned building.

That young man is now climbing the ladder of epic-ness, way beyond my own lulz status, but I like to think that I helped propel him along in some small way.

Well, I'll just say that we ended up, post-explore, back at my place with her and her roommate, luckily having the wife and kids out of town for the weekend.

Well congrats on the mentoring thing, that is always commendable.

But a super high five for the imaginary roommate thing.

That happens inside my head all the time!

Back in the day, I took a young man out to the Canada Malting Plant, he answered an invitation on some message board that myself and Tekriter posted. We invited any local explorers to come out, the only person who responded was that particular young man. He didn't know us, he didn't really explore yet, and invited us to his apartment to pick him up. We arrived sometime after midnight, he just jumped into the car, no questions asked. We spent most of the night inside the malt plant in Toronto.

Later.... that young man started a website dedicated to Urban Exploration, some of you might know the site, it is www.uer.ca

Moral of the story, don't judge a person by their age, some are actually a lot more mature then you would expect. On the flip side, I'd be very afraid of someone who was very immature, that could really screw up an exploration.

I'm 52 and Bill, my local buddy that I do most of my exploring with is 68. Mostly when we're out with the younger crowd we just make sure to take our naps, gut load on Geritol and leave our wheelchairs at home so we don't spook the kiddies!

We were in an abandonment in NY a while back when we ran into another group of young people who thought we must be Security or some other Important Old People that belonged there. We talked, did a walk through and told each other what was where and ultimately exchanged numbers. Now whenever we're in the NY area we always call Nelson who's a mere 25. And he's always happy to meet us except when he's healing...like now. Seems he busted his hand doing something or other.

The main differences I see in our exploring styles is that Nelson tends to damn the torpedoes and charge ahead without thought of physical injury. I'm not saying he isn't careful but I don't think he's at the stage of life where you realize this shit can hurt/kill you and you don't heal as fast as you did at 20. He also makes me remember when I was like him and did whatever I wanted too.

Yeah, getting old kinda sucks but age does have some benefits. For instance I feel I have a better chance of talking my way out of a situation with Security/Police than some 18yo with baggy pants and full camo gear that gets caught at night with B&E tools in his backpack. I'm also less likely to get stopped for being somewhere I'm not supposed to be just because I'm an adult. We oldsters have built in Credibility Props!

I've also been impressed with most of the younger crowd I've met exploring. Most of them seem to be on a pretty straight life path, mature for their ages and have an intense interest in both photography and history. I didn't take pictures for the first 20 years I did this but I've always been interested in the history behind the place I'm in. I also think that the younger people tend to know more spots to go because of their extra time available and the fact that they get to cruise around more than I do. When I was young I knew every abandoned house and building in town.

Finally, for those of you that feel weird picking up young boys at their parents home, not to worry! Whenever I encounter a nervous parent or concerned neighbor I just flash my NAMBLA badge and tell them that Junior will be safe as milk with me and that there's no cause for concern. This makes it all Official like and really puts the parent at ease. Glad I could help!

I'm 29 and 3/4 years old and I'm posting here...sue me. Now I'm not as old as you guys are. You all have to be REALLY old....

Anyway, even for being 29 or maybe 27 when I first met this kid (think he was 18 or 19) in my area it was kind of strange at first. Especially when I found out he was 18. He can't even drink! His online persona and even meeting him at local meets didn't clue me in on young he was

But he did have his own transportation. He seemed very independent from his parents who I think he lives with. Also he wasn't a super ninja urbex or anything like they might be at that age. He's very down to earth and trustworthy.

There's also some newer college-aged people in my area, they're not too bad too.

I don't know where I'm going with this, but I guess I've had good luck with the 18+ to lower 20's demographic in my area urbex-wise

Now if you had to pick them up at their parents or something, forget that. And if I was say 40 and hanging out with the 18 yo's, I dunno about that either....not sure.
