Ok I was driving to work the other night and this song comes on the radio. I am thinking to myself "I loved that tune way back when, I should download that when I get home."

Well my old lady brain has shoved it back into the far reaches of my memory and I can't remember what the tune was or who did it. Ya know like walking into a room with a mission in mind and get there and can't remember what the hell you were going to do.

Sucks to get old or maybe there is a reason that song needs to remain off the playlist. Please chime in and tell me I am not the only one who goes to the grocery store and leaves the list on the table every freakin time.

I've thought up a book title for your ailment: "Where I was when I forgot what I was doing." Kind of a Dave Barry-esque screed on growing older and the problems that comes with it.

It's happened to me as well. The worse part is that I can hear part of the lyrics or even the actual tune but can't remember the song title or the artist. I have a couple of friends who used to be DJs and they would go crazy helping me. Of course, they are also willing to help (and were successful on a couple of occasions) as they love old music.

Remembering part of the lyics would be great. I could at least google them and I normally can get it that way. This song is a total bust. I even looked at lists of 80's and 90's bands and nothing stood out ARGH!

You should PM Ophie and ask her to call you. I almost guarantee that she will know the song if you hum a few bars for her.

See I can't even do that or I would put a file up for you to listen to. I would embarrass myself that much just to figure it out.

All I can remember was that it was a tune that was played a lot at a bar I went to on Tuesday nights (.25 beer and pizza night) and I could not believe that I forgot all about it.

You go looking for something, and you can't remember what you went in there for? Yeah, I've done that so many times, when i go out to the garage, what I was looking for before comes to mind, and I can start looking for that.

Takes about 2 min to figure out what I went out there for. If I even remember.

Shellyl: Here's my theory on memory deterioration.
Your memory is basically like a big piece of Swiss Cheese. Think of incoming data as fast flying debris that slams into the cheese and gets stuck there for you to examine. When the cheese is young there are only a few holes and the data/debris rarely flies through a hole which means it is forgotten. As you age the holes get bigger and bigger. Now incoming data/debris is just as likely to fly through a hole as get stuck on the cheese. You ask someone their name and it's gone as fast as it was said. (As if you never even heard it). It means your "short-term" memory in pretty much gone. You can still learn stuff, but it requires lotsa repetition and periodic review.
The good news?..Old cheese is the best. The flavor (memories) are aged and mellow, and wonderful to enjoy with a nice vintage wine. (If you can remember where it is).

The great bottles of wine never hit holes in the cheese. Ha! just the memories of what I did when I was drinking it.

getting old
Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table. Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my chequebook off the table and see that there is only one cheque left. My extra cheques are in my desk in the study so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my cheques but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. The Coke is getting warm and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye - they need water.

I put the Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realise that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table so I decide to put it back in the living room where it belongs... but first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: The car isn't washed. The bills aren't paid. There is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter. The flowers don't have enough water. There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book. I can't find the remote. I can't find my glasses. And I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all damn day and I'm really tired.

I realise this is a serious problem and I'll try to get some help for it but first I'll quickly check my e-mail...

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.
