i have an '01, discovered the funny noise when turning was a broken front spring on the passenger side, missing about an inch or 2 off the end of the coil. Anyways ride height is fine so its not a massive break, now for the fix, anyone know if in the years after 01 they changed the suspension at all, since its my winter car i figure ill pick up a macpherson already loaded with a spring at the junkyard and put it on, i just wonder if a macpherson off an 04 will work fine on my 01, if thats the case gonna do the down and dirty fix!

samurai what are your thoughts

coil springs are cheap. Take the old unit out completely, bring it to a shop, they'll put the new spring on, and all you have to do is bolt it back up (then bring it for an alignment)

Monroe also makes a quick strut set up with everything all in one ready to go for most common applications.

big dave: not sure if you're serious or not, but broken coil springs are common in 97 to present day Fords. Windstar, Escort, Contour, Taurus.... they frequently drop front coils.

basically, the Cavalier/Sunfire were the same from 1995 to 2005... honestly though, I would try to match the strut up to your year as close as possible just to eliminate any weird x-factor.

one thing that J-bodies were notorious for was the strut bearing making a clunking noise after some miles piled on the car.

And make sure the strut bearing isn't entirely sezied... that's what usually causes the springs to break in J bodies.

yeah, they clunk pretty hard leading up to failure and then, the sinister silence of a siezed strut bearing.
