Another developer has bought the boarded-up Genosha Hotel and this time the new owners are planning on cleaning it up and turning it into student housing. I wish I could get in with their permission for some "before" pics...

I would love to go over there myself and take pics, but it's locked down tight!

About time! Place would be perfect for student housing and gee, next door to the Regent theatre.

With everything that the Genosha Hotel has gone through in the past its nice to know that it will be taken care of. I mean its been run down for awhile and has been in dire need of restoration for quite some time. I'm glad the Municipal Heritage Committee in Oshawa was able to have it made a designated historical site. It was Oshawa's first luxury hotel afterall.

Much like the Regent theatre. For a while, it looked like the place was going to be demolished.

Sadly, Oshawa didn't give a damn about its heritage for the longest time and that really pissed me off.

Yeah most people thought it would be demolished, which was actually mind blowing because something that old (built in the early 20's i think) should definitely be designated historic. I believe the original name was famous players and when it opened was state of the art everything...seats, screen, sound and it even had air conditioning. A friend of the family since past told me that "seeing shows at the old regent theatre was great because there wasn't a bad seat in the house". I was also told that the capacity is considerably less then it once was (around 700 now compared to 1000+ in its hayday) and through its many changes throughout the years served as a nightclub. Now i never knew that so i was amazed to hear it. I love bits of history like that because frankly, if nobody takes the time to tell it, then nobody will ever know.

I'm glad the city of Oshawa stopped allowing it to fall apart and finally dumped badly needed money into it.

The Regent theatre was always called the Regent. Famous Players was the company that commissioned her construction (1919) and they ran it pretty much until 1989. They had their name on the old marquee in lights with their logo which was really cool looking. That was removed when the theatre closed down for the first time.

Original capacity was 1000 which then was reduced to around 850 when the concession stand was installed during the '50s. The place is once again privately owned but the owner has to comply with a number of conditions to run the place. Shutterbug and I were there last October when the place was reopened and despite some issues we had a great time. The entire performance was top notch and the champagne that was served was a very nice touch. I even spoke with the owner and he seems pretty cool. Plenty more info but I don't want to derail this thread any farther. (Sorry Fedge).

Back to the Genosha. I remember visiting someone who had rented a room there and the room was looking kinda run down (this was in the 90s). The restaurant that was at street level had really nice breakfasts and my parents and I used to go there on the weekends during the 80s. We stopped going when the place turned rough though. I remember the placemats they had one Christmas season which had Santa up on several charges. It was pretty funny. I believe I still have the copy that was given to me and if I find it I'll scan it in and post it.

Yeah its amazing how fast threads can be derailed like that (sorry to Fedge aswell) but thanks alot for the information you have given. Lots of stuff learned about the Regent that i never knew, but glad i do now.

I would love to go and check out the Genosha, but as N1Hawk has posted previously it's locked up real tight. What do you think are the chances we could get a hold of the owner and somehow convince him to let some of us snap a few shots? Fedge had it right, we should of somehow got some before pictures.

By the by, if you do happen to find that old placemat please do post some pictures if your able. Would love to see it.

Now i dunno about the rest of you, but when its all finished and ready to go i wanna see what $6.1 million in renovations looks like.

I definitely will post that placemat! And Fedge, if you have any luck contacting the owner, let us know.

I'll see what I can do on my end.
