its not commonly used, it was (dont know if it is any more, this is just stuff I heard from old timers) used to hunt down spies listening to number stations, and sometimes in war to detect the other sides RX set .

most facilities dont have the equipment period to do it, its very rare, and anything else you have will make more noise on the RF recce then a local ossilisator.

What does this have to do with Big Dave following the local PD and newspaper reporters? Wasn't aware that there were PD and newspaper reporters hanging out with troops during field training, with possible MP's following their every move.

Although it may be possible to have two scanners on hand. One to monitor the MP's, which may be blocked with digital coding, and the other to monitor the PD/newspaper guys. However, you'd need two earpieces to monitor both, which leaves you screwed if a troop member or someone else tries to sneak up on you.

But you could scan all the freqs which proves to be adequate enough, but might miss out on secret info that the MP's are sending. Then again, if you have a buddy who's monitoring the PD and newspaper people, and then you monitor the MP's traffic, that could work as well.

But the chance of having a buddy with you in the field during training or even with you in the city is usually slim, unless you have him join you in advance to go over the tactical moves in order to get your best possible reception of these events happening.

Then the question remains of why you're wanting to monitor the MP's to begin with or why the PD and newspaper people are in the field with you, or how the hell you got on to the base to begin with when you're not a member or authorized personnel of that base in order to gain access to the field where they're practicing these training exercises.

I guess we're screwed then and would have to forget this and go play with payphones or watch some more TV. This way I'm caught up on all the new and advanced military stuff so I could quite possibly defeat this idea, go monitor the freqs with a bud on the field, and pay close attention to those MP's, PD cops, and newspaper crews.

Negative, it isn't illegal.

The Radiocommunications Act doesn't specifically prohibit you from listening to stuff. The only things it forbids are divulging what you hear, and making use of what you hear. In english, this means that what you hear, you cannot repeat to others and you can't make use of for personal gain (IE, you hear two people talking about something you could make $$ off of).

There's also another section of an act, I can't recall exactly which one right now, that says it is illegal to intercept and make use of any private communication (which is a communication where both the sender and receiver have a reasonable expectation that their communication is private, such as a wire-line phone).

So no, it isn't illegal to listen, provided you keep it to yourself and don't try and cash in.

No, a trunked radio system isn't considered private. There's no difference between a regular conventional system and a trunked one, privacy wise.

Encryption however is a different ballgame. Agencies buy encryption for the explicit reason of privacy, so therefore listening to an encrypted communiation (or more in particular, attempting to break it), is illegal.

Cellphones are free game, provided they aren't encrypted.(I believe GSM has crypto, however iDEN/Analog/CDMA does not).

The encryption algorithm used in the GSM system is a stream cipher known as the A5 algorithm.

Multiple versions of the A5 algorithm exist which implement various levels of encryption.

* A5/0 utilizes no encryption.
* A5/1 is the original A5 algorithm used in Europe.
* A5/2 is a weaker encryption algorithm created for export and used in the United States.

So basically it's watered down for the US and Canadian markets, but you still have it.

Heck, you could use 1 bit encryption which is certainly NOT secure in the least, however it is enough to prevent the casual listener (IE, buddy with a scanner) from hearing you. This is what voice inversion scrambling is. It can be EASILY beaten, in fact there's software programs available that can do it in real-time...the point isn't to make it impossible, rather to make it enough of a PITA that the average person doesn't care to bother...and to make it illegal.

I'm not arguing that either way - simply confirming your thought that it has encryption. If someone wants to listen in badly enough, they will somehow, right?

I know that encryption is only used in iDEN Harmony systems (like ARNIC's private iDEN system found at most airports). I think CDMA2000 and cdmaOne does support encryption, but no one has it installed.
