My sweet Little Bear passed away suddenly yesterday morning due to complications from surgery. He was my constant companion for over three years and I miss him dearly. I still can't believe that he's gone.

I thought that I would cry a whole lot more (don't get me wrong, I have cried a lot already); but instead it seems that I just feel empty inside. I feel like a different person, like a part of me is missing. It was just he and I in my apartment, and now the silence is unbearable.

OMG, looking at my pictures again; he's the cutest cat in the world. Look at his little brown bear nose! He had the softest fur and the prettiest green eyes. Sometimes the white parts of his fur would be so white that they were glowing.

I'm sure that every (cat) momma says that their baby is the prettiest, lol.

It takes time but maybe you'll be willing to adopt a new kitty at some point. When my 17-year-old Roo died in 2006 I vowed I'd never replace her. Three months later I had the wonderful Violaine (1-yr-old at the time). A few months after that I adopted the cranky but lovable Tacker (he sadly passed away last fall due to kidney failure). You'll find room in your heart and home again...

We had to take another cat in. There was just nothing that could fill the hole our late animal left.

My parents joke that it took two of them to replace Boots and it certainly did. We'd had Boots since 1985, he lived with us for 18 and a half of his 19 years. My sister went to pick up our kitten and ended up taking another animal too. Meadow and Sammy came into my house in February of 2003. Meadow departed this world in October of 2003 and by May of 2004, we had to do something. Sammy was depressed and lonely without his sister, he didn't want to eat or play much and we weren't in much better shape without Meadow either. So, we ended up driving to New Hampshire Memorial day weekend of 2004 and bringing home a little silver ball of fluff we named Sally.

The longest two weeks of my life were the two weeks between Boot's passing and the arrival of Sammy and Meadow. The two weeks without a cat at all, we had to wait for Sammy to be ready to move in with us. It was so bad that on my way home at night, I would plot how to steal (and get away with it) the little black fuzzy cat that sat on the fence of the house near where I worked.

Someone sent me this when we lost Boots, it's something I kept and made me feel a little better. It's out on the internet, but I've kept it because it's how I like to think of Boots and Meadow.

"One day a cat dies of natural causes and goes to Heaven. There he meets the Lord himself. The Lord says to the cat, "You lived a good life and if there is any way I can make your stay in Heaven more comfortable, please let Me know."

The cat thinks for a moment and says, "Lord, all my life I have lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor." The Lord stops the cat and says, "Say no more," and a wonderful fluffy pillow appears.

A few days later six mice are killed in a tragic farming accident and go to Heaven. Again the Lord is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer, "All of our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs, and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we're tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so we don't have to run anymore?" The Lord says, "Say no more," and fits each mouse with beautiful new roller skates.

About a week later the Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him in a deep sleep on the pillow. The Lord gently wakes the cat and asks him, "How are things since you arrived?"

The cat stretches and yawns and replies, "It is wonderful here. Better than I could have ever expected. And those Meals on Wheels you've been sending by are theeeeeeee best!!!"

So sorry for your loss...

My daughters cat Stormy passed away a few years ago. I told my daughter we wouldn't replace her right away, but the house seemed so empty without her that within a week we had gone to the shelter and adopted a kitten. We named her Heaven as a reminder of where our Stormy had gone.

Thank you all for the kind words. Today I started to clean up his litter box and food/water bowls. It just doesn't feel real. I keep thinking that he's at the vet and I'll get to bring him home soon.

Hm...actually he is at the vet's, at least his body is. I'm going to have him cremated. I just want him near me again.

Heh, I know people will find this odd, but in 2006 in took my recently passed away Roo and placed her in a box, wrapped it a dozen times in garbage bags and duct taped it tightly. I placed the box under the stairs in the basement.

I'm not a cat fanatic but he was a pretty kitty. Of course, there are a few cats I know that I am very fond of and if people saw me with them, they'd think I am a cat fanatic.

My condolences on your loss. Yes, you'll feel empty inside (I felt the same way when we had a dog put down years ago) and the house may be too quiet.

Take your time and if/when you're up to it, get a successor to Bear. A sad fact of being a pet lover is that we often outlive our pets.

Beautifully said! I have come to grips with the fact that he is gone. The shock has been replaced with a heavy sadness.

They're doing an autopsy tomorrow, so I will be finding out the cause of death.

We lost our dog of 16 years yesterday, Cancer sucks, poor baby. Her name was Paegan, black Pitt, pain in the ass rescue dog, she got in a fight with our Pekegnese and killed her, a few years later she sent our collie to the ER.
These were our fault not hers, while others said to dump her, we just couldn't do that she was a pain but she was family and she was loved. We are now down to 4 dogs.

R.I.P Paegan.

I'm so sorry to hear that! It's heartbreaking, isn't it?

My kitty was sick and made my place very messy (I won't go into details), but I love(d) him soooo much and didn't care.

I forgot to say sorry for your loss!!! Our poor girl was ashamed off the messes she made. But she's forgiven.

Thanks cr400 and Nan!

Well, I spoke to the vet for about half an hour today. They did an autopsy, but they found nothing wrong. They had initially thought that his bowels might have ruptured from all the vomiting, but they were intact. There was no blood anywhere, and everything seemed ok.

So basically the vet had no idea why he died. The most he could say was that he might have had a heart attack or something. So much for closure.

I only hope that it was not painful, and that he went quickly. I feel so bad that I did not get to say a proper goodbye.

We just lost our 2nd old dog this past weekend, she was 21yrs old (wow)
We lost our last dog about 3 weeks ago, she was 16yrs old. We are now down to three dogs. We'll see how long we can hold at this number. We picked up our most recent dog about 10 months ago, He is about 2yrs old 120 lbs, and is the biggest doofus on the planet. We waited until his injection day to pick him up because he is so much to handle. He was at the pound for 6 months, nobody wanted to put him down. But nobody wanted to take him home either.

Get another cat, or at least keep open to one, as I know there is one out there that needs you, Little Bear won't mind!!!!
