I picked one of these up on the weekend to give it a play around, and I have to say it's pretty impressive.

There's three modes on it. Nightlight, which is a small orange light, one tube, or both tubes.

It runs on 4D batteries, and it has a bit of weight to it.

Is what she looks like.

And this was a 30 second exposure, with both tubes (or was it one? I don't remember...)

Believe it or not, I bought one of those just the other week! My local Coles had one on the shelf for months. When I saw it marked it down to ten bucks, I couldn't say no.

I got a Sunpak 355 for $5 yesterday and test-fired it at noonish on a sunny day, pointed at a beige car roof. I'm not used to wearing sunglasses and seeing blue-white fury so bright. I think I could at least incapacitate someone with it, although I wish I knew how to calculate approximate retinal damage from light sources.

How far away was the light source? And what angle did you have it at? I know those flourescent tubes aren't directional, but sometimes it can make a big diff with certain subjects. -- Good idea. I'll have to try that out sometime. Thanks!

Four D-cells are quite heavy when you're used to comparatively-tiny LED things. I have a 6V rechargeable fluoro that's somewhat lighter than the Energizer, but it only has a fraction of the runtime of those D-cells.

you can recharge those however. How long does it last? My fluro goes about 90 minutes.

I think the Energizer claims 20 hours with both tubes, or 40 hours with one, which outdoes the two or three hours that my small rechargeable manages.

The Energizer also has a little LED night-light, which would probably run for years on D cells

I'll draw up a handy little picture in paint later today (or when I get home from work)

but it was about 1.5 metres on the ground angled up at maybe 45 degrees?

The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

I found one of those Energizer lanterns in an abandoned hotel a couple months ago...still had good batteries in it, perfect condition!

It's pretty cool, but I don't find it useful for exploring or light-painting; too bulky to bother bringing along, and not nearly as bright as many much smaller light sources I use.

Looks good.... I have been wondering about the Coleman Quad Lantern.

* (24) 5 mm white LED
* 190 lumens
* 4 removable sections
* Each section contains a handle for easy carrying and NiMH rechargeable battery that powers it when away from the base
* Each section provides 90 mins of light per charge
* Panels recharged by 8D batteries in lantern base
* 75 hours of light on one set of batteries
* 8D batteries (sold separately)

And when you finally disappear, We'll just say you were never here.

My thoughts exactly! 80 hours is a long time, though.

I picked up this one for $11 today and although I'm kind of meh on the light output (its not bad, but not 200 lumens like my surefire) it has a really nice build quality to it.

Anyone have one? I'm gonna keep it as a small draining torch since I have trashed far too many lights with water

Edit: I'm gonna trade it for the swivel head one ;)

yes, its water proof from the gaskets, but obviously not for scuba diving like a pelican...
