I once found the ladder from ground level to the roof of a mall. It had one of those dumb wire doors over the rungs so it was "safe". The place to lock it had two locks, both were simple master locks. One was just through the other locks shackle. The one lock that was attached, was supposed to be locking the door in place, was totally open and just hanging there.

This is from a long time ago, and was obviously used whilst the place was open, but had become somewhat redundant after closure...

This might be intended more as a safety measure, but either way I think this joke of a ladder guard, and the gate underneath, belongs here.

Odessa is a complete industrial shithole with the highest murder rate per capita in Texas but that's mostly domestic and banger murders.

Finally found something funny enough to contribute to this thread again.

Checked out a row of six abandoned houses waiting for development in a small village near where I work, and this was the sight that greeted us along the fenceline when we pulled up. The gate is locked, yes, but only to the fixed pole next to it, the fence panel on the right you could simply pick up out of the base and move to one side...

For a long time the east side of Fort Ord in CA had gates locked with zip ties.

Haven't been by there in at least 5 years though.

There is a massive series of tunnels under my school. They're mostly abandoned about a century old. Some are too small to even sit up in. In 2019, there was apparently a huge problem with students sneaking into the tunnels. The most easily accessible entrance to the tunnels, which is right next to a bathroom in an obscure hallway, was secured with a $200 lock. The doorknob is circular, which makes using an under-the-door tool impossible, and there is no way I'd be able to pick the lock. I thought I would never be able to explore the tunnels, that is, until I saw the actual door. There's a pipe that runs along the wall and into the tunnel, and the way it's positioned made it so the door couldn't close properly. Rather than adjusting the pipes, the school decided that the best course of action was to cut a giant hole under the doorknob so the pipe could run through. I was literally able to reach through the hole and open the door from the other side. It wasn't even a tight fit. I'll post pictures of the tunnels as soon as I can.

Eastern Fence needs to step up their game, you can squeeze right through the very flexible chain-link to the right of the gate (or climb over it), making it quite easy to enjoy Bay of Fundy during the off season.

Not really 'pathetic' but definitely interesting. The owners of this vacant (but refurbished) pub decided that instead of using large concrete blocks like is normally used to block off car park entrances to stop people from parking/camping/making a mess there, instead they would use a Nissan Micra and a - very rarely seen in the UK - Toyota Camry wagon.

I've encountered a few pretty bad ones recently.

They built a tall wall out front, and the gate is locked. But move around to the side, and...the wall stops.

While the front gate of this closed wedding hall was opened, I got a quick look in. The golden front doors there are chain locked (not quite visible). But anyway, first you'd have to get inside the fence while no workers are there. So it's two layers of security.

Or you could follow the active alley around to the side of the building, where there's no fence, and go in through these side doors that are totally unlocked.

Got another one recently while trying to surveil an abandoned US base.

The door is locked from the outside. The window is locked from the inside.

I'd laugh, but this is at least my third time encountering this combination.
