Well, I just got back from helping with communcations (as a ham) for this rally race here in Oregon.

I was for day 1 at Portland Int'l Raceway helping at the start position for the first stage.

http://picasaweb.g...cQ&feat=directlink

2nd and 3rd day I was the ham at spectator area for local landowners

http://picasaweb.g...SQ&feat=directlink

http://picasaweb.g...Mw&feat=directlink

Winner was Travis Pastrana in car 199.

Samarui, there was a team using a Cavalier And then there was that giant team from Vermont. Someone told me that its easier to get rally cars registered in Vermont...any truth to that.

And Bandi, I was disappointed with car 20 that he had Washington state plates bolted on and not Ontario plates!

Overall, I had a fun.

how did the Cavalier team do? Please tell me not dead last... i'll never hear the end of it. Vermont Sports Car is really on a roll now. They moved out of their shop on Hercules Drive in Colchester VT and moved into the old Hyundai shop in Burlington, right behind Burlington Subaru/Hyundai on Shelburne Road (route 7).
as for registering cars in Vermont, if it's got wheels, you can get tags for it.

I think they came in somewhere in the middle...I'm trying to find what car number they are to find out for sure. Rally Amercia's website isn't listing the full results for the stage I was on.

Oh sure, use the insurance excuse I expect cars to registered from where they are from DAMMIT!

I was thinking of going over to them in the service area and saying "Anyone know a guy with the alias of Bandi who has an obsession with VW bugs?"

I did end up taking with the driver from Alberta (which may I add did HAVE Alberta plates).

Big Dave: We were on VHF. Each stage had its own frequency in addition to having Net Control. There was also a "chat" frequency assigned so people can talk to each other. The idea wit this plan is that people on the stages would talk to each other and Net Control had the ability to talk to all stages. There would be a ham at start, midpoint, spectator areas, and finish. The E-crew, sweep, and the pace cars were all hams so they talked directly as they went by. We had a ham with race officials and the ambulances.

Well, I just took a look at the start list for the event and of course, I don't see a GM product anywhere. So I checked with someone else who has a better memory than me and boy I am a jackass here. The car in question was a 1995 Subaru Impreza.

/me hands Samarui a bat to beat me silly with.

And I just realized that #20 placed as first on the stage I was working which was stage 6 called "Ketchum If U Can."

Rally racing is awesome, very cool that you got to be in on it and (I assume) have a front-row seat for all the action.

Also Travis Pastrana's #199 is awesome. He's hero-worthy.

Front Row Seat? I was basically a race official!

On day one at Portland International Raceway, that sign gave me the authority to drive on the track when it was cold! (Which I did)

Travis Pastrami is already a hero!!!! Check out his nitro circus, and Erzberg enduro videos. For those of you that don't know of the erzberg enduro, it is considered THE toughest race in the world, 1300 riders started and I think 12 finished( I know that the number was low ) These are the best riders in the world and it turns them into babbling, crying, skin sacks. Youtube it,
Travis kills.

Yeah, we talked to him for a minute after he got his trophy and I agree.

What was funny was that one of the other hams' daughters went up to him and asked for his hat. He said no as he only gets 3 of them a year, but then we realized its probably his lucky hat...
