I know I can order them from out of the country, but does anyone know of a good digital scanner without the blocks on it? Or does anyone know of any scanners I can buy here in the USA that I can unblock?

Thanks!
Sace

What do you mean unblocked? as in the cellular band?

Yes, and other random bands that mysteriously don't show up on American scanners.

Now why would you need that?

I just like having what others do not...Like human brain specimens, a few computer hacks, and a scanner that picks up everything!

Well good luck then. Export Scanners are kind of hard to get into the US.

I already have an unblocked Icom RC-5... and I think I'm going to spend the extra few hundred and get the RC-7...

I just didn't know if someone on here had any better ideas. I'm sure there are other ways out there, but a google search only comes up with things people are trying to sell you.

A lot of them have the blocked ranges in a EEPROM which is tricky to get changed.

I figure with all the technology out there these days, there would be something to reprogram regular everyday scanners. No luck as of yet, so I guess it's all in the extra money instead of learning a new skill.

You do know most cellular traffic is not on those "blocked" scanner channels anymore....

its easy, google for "cellular mod" or frequency mod or just mods and add the make and model of your scanner. if it takes more than 10 minutes to find the info, you are more likely s.o.l.

my radioshack pro-94 can be modded to pick up the mil aircraft frequencies, not because of law, more expensive models cover this band, but most of military uses digital so the manufacture figured you would not use it. Its kinda simple, clip a diode and solder a resistor across a chip. Simple as in how its done, its much easier to fry the circuts with your iron than do the mod though.

Most scanners made after 1990 something are extremely difficult to mod due to federal law, actually from what I gather its a federal offense to mod a scanner to pick up cellular, but it is legal to possess one made before the ban.

Not that it matters anymore, virtually of cellular traffic is encrypted digital these days so its really pointless, however the law is still in effect.

These laws were passed as a response to a political scandal that was uncovered by a couple who recorded cell phone calls of gingrich and bohner. just to make it harder to expose such corruption congress passed laws making it a federal offense to as much as listen to cellular conversations.

But it aint hard to do, its only in the USA, shoulnt be too hard for someone determined enough to listen to the noise and squak of the cellular bands. Not too hard for someone dedicated to exposing a corrupt politician who just happens to be using analog carrier, to sneak a scanner in from canada, obtain a frequency transverter, buy a pre-1994 model or modify an existing. I have even heard you could pick up such with an old television set.

I-hacked.com, hackaday, mods.dk, those type of sites have info for mods, not all are illegal, just the cellular mods.

the radio shack PRO 2400 was one of the models that came out when the legislation was passed in 1986. Find one that was not sent back to be locked and your golden. I had one years ago and there IS stuff to listen to in the locked bands...

probably not much, but i am sure you will find some transmissions that arent supposed to be there. some countries have ham bands that use the same spectrum as our TV channels. i would not be suprised if someone ended up buying some chinese $49 special off ebay and ended up transmitting in cell bands.

Depending on your area there is quite a few things you can hear. Some police and fire still use older non trunking radio systems that transmit between 8-900mhz. Its quite common in small towns and under funded departments. Ive also heard analog cell phone conversations up till about 2 years ago when i loaned the scanner out and never got it back. You would be surprised what is still in those bands that is not encoded or scrambled even today....

My very first memory of scanning came when I was about 15 and we were hanging out with a friend who had a very old analog world band radio that literally covered everything from 0-512MHz. We found a frequency that carried voice pages over the air, clear as day.

When I heard the old woman call her nurse via page letting her know she shit her pants, well, let's just say I was hooked.
