I just got a letter in the mail today:

http://www.legacyg...hread.php?t=114455

I know the Catalytic Converters were brand spankin new (stickers hadn't even been removed/or burned off) a few months ago.

So guess I need to go see my dealer.

I have been driving along those very bad habit lines too. Cruise control at 80 on the Mass Pike. ~75-80 on my average highway commute. I hope I haven't fucked anything up yet. I don't think I would have; I mean ... 133,000-something on it when I bought it. Just hit the 139,000 mark a week or two ago. Wasn't driving fast until the Mid April (ice/snow stopped around then). Last oil change was at 136,800.

Well according to the letter I got:

The (new) Catalytic Converters are now warrantied for 100K/10 years. I won't keep the car that long. And it's just an ECU reprogram. I won't "lose any performance". Ha we'll see on that one.

And it's all free repair for me.

Newer cars, By New York State need a Cat to pass inspection.

My car STILL needs a cat.
I took the damn thing to Meineke and they offered to weld it for $300? Some high price. It was much higher to have them replace it. Only did it so the car would pass inspection.

Car was quiet for the first month, After that.. The damn thing rattles.

Luckily for those of us in Northern New York, as opposed to Caligula in Long Island, we don't have to succumb to emissions testing. As long as the emissions system is there (basically is the cat on the car?) and the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON lights are out, the car can pass.

Oregon its the same, but I think if you have some weird purpose, you can be even exempt from having a cat.

you can be exempt from having a catalytic converter if the car was manufactured prior to 1986.
However, the big sticking point with people up here is that any vehicle manufactured after 1996, OBDII, must be plugged into a computer that is linked to the DMV computer in Albany before an inspection sticker is issued. OBD-I cars are exempt. Also, cars that are less than or about a year old are exempt from plugging into the MASTER DMV EVIL COMPUTER.

You CAN request I know the old school emissions testing with the roller bar and the tailpipe dipstick if you have some weird reason at test time, but those are normally reserved for a certain generation of cars.

Oregon does testing only in the Portland and Roseburg areas as that's where the most cars are and well where the problem is.

I have a guy who will do a fake e-test for me for $100. It's fantastic, as the Tercel doesn't come remotely close to passing.

I remember a while back I saw some stats from Oregon DEQ who does emissions testing for the state on what are the most common failures and it wasn't stupid stuff like the gas cap or the cat, it was more like total lack of maintenance and it mostly cars 1980 to 1989 that had the most failures.

Tennessee was nice because they did not have any inspection requirements. As soon as I got down there, I took my 91 Cavalier RS to the Maxi Muffler in Dayton and had a new custom pipe bent from manifold to bumper, sans catalytic converter. I did have a sweet Flowtech Raptor muffler on it... it sounded good through the 1/4" larger pipe.
