Retro console - with old skool games.

Can anyone recommend a good game console ? Specifically, I'm looking for something retro that has more simplistic arcade games. Shooters, side-scrollers, platform, fighters and the like. I'm not familiar with all the consoles (Dreamcast, megadrive etc) except Atari 2600 & Super Nintendo. I like SNES (already have one) but was hoping for something a bit more beefier like a 32bit system. Nintendo 64 would be perfect but that console has mostly more sophisticated 3D games and too many kiddie games.....I'm after the simple fun stuff but would like nicer graphics than what the SNES offers. Thinking maybe Sega Saturn

Any recommendations ?

Each console from that generation definitely had their strong points / weak points. For what you want (a simple, arcade y library and 32+ bit graphics), the Sega Dreamcast would probably be your best bet.

Don't completely cast aside the N64. It had some great titles. The original NES is also golden but can be a finicky piece of shit to get working correctly.

Best solution? Get an emulator + roms to try things out. That way your decision to buy the real thing will be easier.

Grab yourself a used first edition xbox, hack it with XBMC or whatever frontend you want to load and load up an emulator. My xbox can play games from the NES, SNES, Intellivision, & Apple II series. It also makes a great media center, all for around $50 or so.

not that I know a whole lot about it but I'd say dream cast ... my boyfriend has several different emulators he runs off it He collects retro consoles and cabinets A lot of the time he just picks up old unwanted consoles and games at thrift stores!

Happy hunting

Basically hacking the xbox is replacing the current software with new software that has more capabilities. The first gen xbox is just a Pentium III computer designed to play games. The hack replaces the xbox OS (operating system) with a new OS that has more capabilities. The xbox will still play xbox games and a whole lot more.

I suggest sega saturn! The 2D king!

you got fighters like virtua fighter 2 etc.. but man.. x-men child of the atom.. darius gaiden.. shining force if you can find it for cheap....

actually if you have a budget maybe a neo geo aes with metal slug, king of fighters... but that is expensive.

If you're looking for something to mod I agree with Jacunda. I have one of those as well and it's fantastic.
If you're looking for something to just use as it is I agree with the dreamcast.
You should look into the old school hand held games and see if there are any that suit your fancy before you make up your mind. People tend to overlook them but I'm rather fond of them.

yeah! I still play game gear! I always bring it with me. I have a laptop bag and always got that in there when I go somewhere.

today I beat streets of rage 2 again, haha. I think I have another 1/2 hour to an hour of battery life left in it. I am lucky though because mine lasts like 5 hours on the 6 AAs.

working on it... lol they cost a fortune. I have about 4 AAs I could use, but you aren't supposed to mix rechargeable and disposables together. As of right now I am finishing up my 20 pack of standard duracels that I got for 10-12 bucks.

Once I get two more energizers I will do a test run to see how 2010 rechargeables work in a 1990 console.
