the kittens do not cost $200 at the Toronto Humane Society... If you actually read their website, it states: "Payment: We do not charge any money for our animals, but ask for your donation to sustain our good work."
Most other shelters will charge $100-$200 for kittens because: a) it covers the cost of being spayed or neutered (which in reality would cost you almost $400 at a vet's office) and b) it also covers all of the first set of vaccines.
I would not mind paying $100-200 to adopt a kitten knowing that I am getting the vaccines and the spaying/neutering and saving around $450 than going to a regular vet and paying close to $650 just for the shots and the spaying/neutering (vet clinics will charge $15 per vaccine plus around 50-60 for exam fee per visit, spaying can range from $300-400 and neutering can range from $160-250).
I guess that having your animal healthy and up to date on shots is less important than money to you though.
