Just a horribly undeveloped, pain in the ass system that generally requires dealership recalibration, etc, etc, etc. One more totally unneccessary idiot light on the dash, and a great way to make a valve stem cost $80.

well on my gp they use the ABS sensors to turn on the check tire press light, its annoying one bad sensor and 4 lights are on.

what's weird is that they were supposed to be mandatory on 2007 and up vehicles. My Cobalt is an 07 and does not have it. Neither does my mom's 07 G6.

The system I saw didn't blink on the dashboard, but was on a small LCD display that showed pressure levels.

There are different types of systems. There are advanced ones that monitor each wheel individually and give a dash read out of the specific wheel, there are ones that just give a warning period... then it`s up to whoever to chase down the wheel in question.... and I believe there are some very early versions that were based on wheel speed sensors. If the vehicle detected one wheel spinning at a significantly different speed, it would trigger a warning.

It gives the tire industry a big fat valve stem sized pain in the ass!! Now a simple tire change might require new valve stems or cores that are specific to TPMs systems. Sensors can be easy to break when dismounting a tire, if the installer isn`t paying attention and a lot of simple tire jobs now require the whole car or truck to be reprogrammed. We charge 30 bones to reset a system which pisses customers off. Some of the systems reset themselves after the vehicle has reached a certain speed.

In a nutshell, it takes an ordinary every day tire job and makes it more time consuming, more delicate and more expensive to the customer. The upside.... ummmmmm yeah i`ll have to get back to you on that one because i`m not aware of any yet

Well, the one system I used was in an Class C RV. Most of the rims on those are double tires with a single stem to interconnect them so a sensor of some sort is no problem.

vehicles manufactured after september 2007 was the cut off point for mandatory TPMS. Your 07 could have been made I would assume up to a year prior to that

That would explain the lack of TPMS in your ride (lucky you)
I think it was 20% of vehicles that had to be equipped with it at that time
