So I am an officer in the Army reserves.
Was active 6 years, post-college, and have been reserve for the past 3.
It's major BS and lots of hassles, but it's also a free $800/month.
Today I was told I have 3 options
-- Go to Iraq
-- Go back to active duty for a year
-- Get out
I don't like being threatened . . .
But at this point, I have 13 cumulative years of service and I need to get to 20 to get a reserve retirement.
What a pain in the ass.

Become a private security contractor.

Go to Iraq, then refuse to follow the directives of a non-natural-born President?

Tell your CO you're gay.

Come hide in Canada's rural heartlands. They can't deport ya if they can't find ya!

Go back to active duty. There are so many dull, but cushy jobs in the field. Something like contract enforcement or T&E are suitable for that goal. Do you know what the active duty entails? Retirement benefits are great and you won't find anything like that elsewhere.

DC, if it's just not fun anymore, or you have to ask yourself these questions, man, maybe it's time to get out.

If going back to full active duty for a year will get you the retirement...go. Just try to get a good posting. Otherwise, I would get the hell out as fast as my two legs could carry me.

Right now, at least one Army National Guard member I know of is scheduled to go to Afghanistan in November of this year. More are probably gonna be going, so I would get out asap or go active and try to get a better placement since it seems they're sending the weekend warriors to the shit posts and the full timers to something a little better.

You joined the Army, and they are making you do Army stuff? Say it isnt so! Go to Iraq or back into active duty for a year, and just ride out those last 7 years so you can have a nice retirement. Dont throw away 13 years.

Cant you tell obama in one of your briefings that one of his top priorities is to fix the situation for you ?

55% of the Army has NOT been to Iraq. Someone Else's turn.
I am not going to waste another 18 months of my life there.
Were it that it's make me a better person, smarter, develop me professionally - I'd be game.
Sadly, I'll sit and do the same shit there that I do here. . . .
That's my problem.
