Helped save a kitten yesterday

I got back from lunch yesterday to see a bunch of my coworkers standing outside the building. When I went to see what was going on I found out that somehow a kitten had managed to fall into an exposed 4" diameter pipe and was now stuck about 10 and a half feet below ground.

After a number of unsuccessful attempts with various made contraptions we managed to get her out with a 12 foot long piece of copper pipe with a hole drilled into one end that we put a rope around and through the pipe. This formed a loose noose that could be tightened at the other end. After a few tries where the cat kept tucking her head down we poured some cold water on her which stirred her enough so we could get the noose around her whole head. We quickly tightened it up and used a clamp to keep it tight at the other end and pulled her up.

The animal control lady took her to a lady nearby who rescues feral cats and she should be up for adoption in a few weeks. If my current cat didn't hate other cats so much I would consider adopting her (I still might anyway.) If I do end up taking her I need to figure out a good name that involves exploring/draining somehow.

Pics: (ya i dumped them from the camera and forgot to rotate them. doh!)

The deep dark hole of death she was stuck down in. We could only see her with a flash light. The vent is now capped off.

Nice work! Good on ya for stepping up and helping out!

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Yes! What she said, god bless you for helping. Last week I found a baby bob cat, it's mother had lost it or pushed it out into the world due to illness, it was at least a couple of months old, malnourished, dehydrated, covered in about 300 fleas. Anyway after a 40 mile trip in a box, we get him home, started him on fluids, he was just grey, I think the fleas bled him to death, he died a couple of hours after arriving at our home.......... Could have saved him if I had got him a day or two earlier. Sad.

Gonna go release a one year old raccoon this weekend, raised him from a bottle fed lil' pup, he's like family now, he would rather be scratched and loved in the morning instead of eat his food. I'll miss him tremendously.

Way to go! If you do adopt her, good luck.

And thanks for sharing this story. Nice to get 'good news' stories from time to time.

I forgot I had taken a pic of the little guy, this was shortly before I buried him. There was just no fight left in him, CPR was even administered by a VET tech, and a trained EMT. If I had gotten to him a day or so quicker, He might have made it?

He looked like the pipe rescue kittie!

Poor little bobcat. Your story reminds me of one I read somewhere, where a man was driving along a country road and he found a "funky looking" cat that had apparently been hit by a car and seemed to be stunned. So he grabbed the cat and put it in the front seat of his car and took it to the nearest vet he could find. The cat did not regain consciousness while it was in his car, which the vet told him was a very good thing as it was

A) a very large male bobcat
only stunned and very pissed when it woke up.

People kept telling me his mother would jump out of the brush and attack me if I tried to get him out from under the bush he was hiding under, freaked me out a little, but he was in such bad shape I had to do something! wish I had heard about him sooner!
