I was trying to sell my 2000 Astra before the clutch went and I had to put more money into the car (180,000km and almost ten years, on the original clutch). No luck, nobody wants used vehicles around here when new car prices have been decimated. Anyway, as of yesterday, it seems the clutch is finally failing. Boooooooo!

Getting the clutch done, keeping the car.

I have replaced more clutches and transmissions than I care to remember, on the good side I have saved millions of dollars in automotive repair bills by doing things myself.

However on the bad side, the older I get the less enjoyment I get out of it, it actually used to be fun!!!

If you do it yourself, enjoy and take your time.
If you have a shop do it, find a good reputable shop.

Good luck!

there is nothing fun or enjoyable about doing a clutch in a front wheel drive car.

I know that, You know that, I just didn't want to rain on his parade should he decide to do it his'self. I've never actually done a front wheel drive clutch, I assume you use a picker and pull the motor up and away?

I've done many, many american Std and Autos, I always bench pressed them in, pull them under with you, roll 'em up onto your chest, tailshaft on the knee, pan or front on your fore arms, and prey you hit the guide pins and have things line up on the first few tries.

I can recall a C6 sitting on my chest for what seemed like an hour, trying to gather up the last bit of strength for that 5th and last try, What a feeling of accomplishment............... still feels great to this day!!! That was 20 years ago.

I finally bought a tranny jack when I turned 40, I just don't have the shit in me anymore to struggle that hard!!

Nah, this is purely an exercise in pouring more money into the thing.

I have a mechanic these days who seems mostly honest, except for one thing. I suspect if he's having trouble working out what's causing a problem, he won't admit it, and will screw around forever with the thing instead. This is mainly related to issues like "the ABS warning light is on."

It's not that he doesn't do a good job with the fundamentals, or that he overcharges at all, just that open and honest communication would inspire more confidence.
