When I was at a Ford dealer in Florida someone had turned in a blue 1975 Mercury Marquis to the clunker program. The car was perfect, ready to be shown, and had "low miles". Fortunately it did get caught in time, a higher-up at the dealer bought it outright. It was sitting in a bay at the far back of the store by the wash bays.

Different wheel covers but pretty much the same car.

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

When I was looking at replacing my car with a Cobalt using the CARS program, every dealer before they looked if I got the 4500 for my car, they pulled out the Kelley Blue Book to see if it was worth more. What it sounds like here is the dealer didn't even do that.

Well that program was a disaster; stolen cars were being turned in as they were not checking VINs. Under CARS, actually the VIN was validated to show it was not stolen.

We have a thing like that in Ontario called "Car Heaven"

I've saved a few decent cars from "heaven" at my dealership, the super reliable '93 Tercel my girlfriend drives every day being one of them. 130,000 km on the thing, even the a/c still works.

hot rod bought a car off the line at a chevron refinery, took it to a chevron gas station... it passed smog check. It wasnt polluting nearly as much as crushing it would get chevron

There is a 2dr Tahoe in this. I'm sorry, if you can't get 4500-5500 for a 2dr Tahoe in this condition on craigslist, you are retarded.

Fortunately, that car wouldn't have been crushed. The program only goes for cars 1984 and newer.

Regardless, the program ran out of our tax revenues, so it's over for now.

...Why are you guys blaming Obama? You should be blaming the not-so-smart dealers who are not checking the KBB or NADA book before they put the car in the system and offer the owner a better deal.

i was talking to the guy i buy parts from in vermont. His wrecking yard has been harrassed by dealers because he refuses to buy the disabled cars. Also he was telling me with the low price of steel some dealers are stuck with these cars because the wrecking yards are giving pennies on the dollar for what they normally give because of the lack of an engine! supposedly some dealers are stuck with disabled cars on thier lots because no wreckers will take them!

most cars are bought because they have a good engine or tranny... yeah, this shit was really well thought out.

Generally the dealer will never do something like that, they are too cutthroat and it's up to the absent-minded owners of probably half of these vehicles.

Don't get me wrong, there are some shitboxes out there that got traded, but many, mostly down south, were too good and worth too much for the program.

I do blame Obama for pushing this forward. It's a foolhardy, wasteful, hypocritical program. It's not green, since it's creating waste and taking cars off the road that really AREN'T that pollutant in comparison, it's not economically helpful either since the only popular car bought through this program that totally benefits our economy is the Ford Focus. I think the program should have only applied to cars produced by domestically based manufacturers that had a certain amount of domestic content in them. No cars made in Mexico either. MAYBE Canada. Other than that, it's just money, sourced from our taxes, hemorrhaging from our economy to foreign entities, with some of the funds sprinkled and splashed on domestic dealer networks and other small time (in comparison) businesses along the way. Regardless, I think we'll see any results in a few months (or years) and can make a better judgment then.

At my friends dealer, they have only been blowing the engines in cars they've received vouchers for. If this program gets even more F'd up, they could have been left holding the bag, and a ton of useless cars with locked motors.
So, they JUST started doing it this week.
All the videos you saw on youtube back in July were fools wrecking cars needlessly and going "huh-huh-huh-huh...it blew up...cool..."

dealers here didn't do cash for clunkers because they didn't want to be stuck with these cars. NO ONE WILL TAKE THESE CARS WITH BLOWN ENGINES HERE. They're doomed to sit on dealer lots until the price of scrap steel goes up or hell freezes over, whichever comes first.

i saw a truck with vermont tags on it today with decent looking cars on it pull into associated steel today. (associated steel is a shredder on the south shore of montreal)
