My '72 Bug is just about finished, so this is next in line:

...it's an '84 VW Rabbit Cabriolet, with Zender side skirts & 1.8 liter big valve solid lifter "JH" engine (Same as the '84 Rabbit GTI)

Probably gonna keep it pretty much stock, aside from exhaust, wheels and suspension.

Should be a fun little summer toy. It's already been nicknamed the "Bitch Basket".

guy around the corner has an old GTi turbo... won't sell it, just letting it rot into the ground. Drives a new Yaris.

ok... on the back of the car it has the normal GTI emblem, but the Rabbit emblem has, for lack of a better description, what looks like two rabbits humping and has TURBO under the RABBIT script.

Any guesses?

A friend who hauls scrap for extra cash picked a pair of them up... paid him $400 for both. The other one is just a parts car (engine is toast, body is toast, top is toast), but has 8 spoke Speedline wheels, a decent interior and lots of spares.

This car needs a new top, (they're pretty cheap actually),the interior is fairly rancid, and it's been sitting for quite a while, so the CIS injection is going to need some love I would imagine, (joy) although I did have it running and it sounded pretty good.

Should be fun for next summer though.

you've gone beyond tool to complete douche...

*edit*

talked with the older guy that owns the GTi and he bought the car brand new from a Volkswagen dealer in Plattsburgh NY back in 1984. It had 9 miles on the odometer and had the turbo on it. He assumed it was a factory set up. He also states that getting parts for the turbo engine was never a problem, and as far as he knew, everything had VW part numbers. The GTi is a 1984 and no, he won't sell it... believe me, i tried.

Now, Bandi, as resident VW historian, what gives with this car? I have a thread going over on VW Vortex, but so far what they have given me is that the car should not exist. There were no forced induction VW's until much later. Is this car some sort of special weirdness?

I've heard of a MKI GTI turbo... but I haven't seen it. I've also heard about them having that particular badge with the two rabbits from a few sources.

There's a good chance it's a Callaway car... they're SUPER rare, but they do exist. They built some Callaway Scirocco turbos as well.

Sam - this the emblem?

I thought it was a silly aftermarket emblem, but I've seen this on 80's VWs before.

as far as I can tell and as can bandi no forced induction VW's exhisted in this period of time, but the callaway kit was like an aftermarket kit, similar to a SRT I suppose

was it sold through or at Volkswagen dealers? It's not like this car got passed around... it's a one owner car.
and yes, the emblem is like that with TURBO after it and FUEL INJECTION under them both.

there's no way this car can be that... i mean, come on, rural New York? No way. I'm thinking that a dealership added it on and sold it as factory.
