As far as I know, only the MK3's have a weak std tranny, mainly the reverse. I know mine did, it would knock in reverse. MK4's seem pretty solid though. Bandi still has the original clutch in his new beetle.

what i am getting at is you guys always make imports out to be some magical machine that has a golden glow and never breaks and have rainbows coming out their tailpipes.
it gets old.
