The fires only affected the 1984 models with the 2.5 Iron Duke. GM reports about 200 cases of fires out of over 370,000 Fieros built from 1984-1988; not even a full percentage of all cars produced. All cars were recalled and checked for the fire issue.
What people don't pay attention to (and why Pontiac did not market this I have no clue) is the fact that the Fiero is actually one of the safest cars of its time; its front and rear impact ratings were up there with the Volvo. I have seen and heard some horrible wreck stories with these cars, and the people will walk away from the wreck.
