Bye bye tercel hello suburban

About a month ago the neighbors daughter decided to pull out of her driveway right in front of me and total my tercel. Didn't exactly make my day since my knees went through the dash and I broke the window with my head. It was an 87' but it only had 64K on it when I rescued it from the crusher at my co-workers salvage yard. People gave it up because the transmission popped out of fourth and the clutch was starting to slip. I put a salvage transmission in it with only 32k on it and a new clutch was just getting ready to turn 90k. I miss that car already.

But I got a deal on a 2001 3/4 ton suburban LT trim package (heated leather, sunroof ect.) and its got the 8.1L in it. I haven't stopped grinning or buying gas since I picked it up on Wednesday last week. Just had to posted about it with all the tire burning fun I've been having.

Full size SUV's are nice to have. I drive my Golf all week, and pack 6 explorers or my family in my Expedition on the weekend. The Expedition used to be our daily driver, but that mofo used too much gas so we started parking it more often. I love my Expedition. You will find that exploring is more fun with a big vehicle. More people, more gear, hell you can even lay down a full size air mattress in the rear and sleep on road trips. I do it all the time, haha.

Suburbans are awesome. Just watch out those 8.1s are notorious for drinking oil.

Yeah I had 10 people in it the other night I wouldn't recommend it and there is only seats for 8 but its amazing how much room this thing has.

Yeah I read quite a bit about these motors before I bought this thing. They use about 1 qt. per 1000 miles if you are using them hard. Its less if your just cruising or driving nicely. My work has a fleet with at least a dozen 8.1's in it and they all use some oil but the ones that tow a trailer use more.

What, no Peterbilts at your neighborhood VW dealer?

Srysly, I never even knew they had an 8.1 liter in the Suburban. The update of the 6.6 diesel? My high mileage 95 gas 5.7 (350 ci) Tahoe did great on a recent 4000 mile trip to Aspen Colorado. Used one quart of oil. Never missed a beat even over Independence Pass. Decent highway mileage, and sleeping in the back offsets the mileage, means we can skip the motels for a few days, or camp in better weather.

I had an old fashioned blowout on I5 near Portland. With the stiff tires, light load, there was no rim damage, could have kept driving, but the steering was a bit soft, and it's best to keep up on the 5.

Large SUV's are fun. Even at 6 feet, I put the cruise on, and can totally stretch my legs out. Minivans are great, but for 20% less mileage will stick with the SUV for a while. Still, your best accessory is a bike or a bus pass

Like Big Dave says, save it for weekends, UE, and stuff unless you own an oil well. Happy Trails.

And you neighbors daughter needs some drivers ed, glad you are okay.

I went from a Tercel to a Durango a few years ago. And promptly went back to the Tercel. 13 mpg just didn't cut it.

Anyhow, gorgeous Suburban! I love the 3/4 tons.

Yes, the plow racket is pretty hard to do even in NY. The people I remeber who did plowing usually did big stuff like entire Wal-Mart parking lots and what not.

I'm still amazed at the fact there's one plow for the entire Crossgates Mall...

A half ton 305 4L60E doesn't seem like that best plow combo, maybe the reason its for sale.
