I will also remember those who came back without their innocence and in many cases, their health.

Very true Samurai. I've spoken with a number of veterans over the years and have heard some pretty awful stories. It gives you a totally different perspective on history when you hear about it first hand from the people who were there making history.

My biological father served 4 years in Vietnam. I don't know where (or who) he is, but if I find him and he tells me about it, I'll tell you guys what I learn.

Dammit. I guess my kids will have to go to their usual summer camp in Afghanistan alone this year.

Here's a story about the above rocket picture. The picture was taken for Stars and Stripes in a story about the capture of the rockets. Glossy B&W copies of the photo were made for each of the men in the photo. Being squad leader, my dad offered to carry the photos in his pack - they were due for R&R soon, and he was going to carry them all then hand them out when they had a break. When he died, the photos disappeared - his possessions went to my mom, who had the stuff boxed up. Years later, in the early 90's, I made an effort to find people who served with and knew my dad. This was pre-internet, so it involved a lot of phone calls and letter writing to Marine Corps archives. One thing led to the next, and I met up with the guy standing 3rd from the left - John George from Pennsylvania. From the men in that photo, he was only one of two to survive the war (he thought there might have been a 3rd, but was not sure). He brought up the photo first - saying "you know, there was a time when we were all in the paper and had a group picture taken - I never knew what happened to those pictures." I was able to pull one out immediately and give it to him.

I also had a photographer turn it into a negative so I could make copies (the ones in the pack had gotten wet and there were only a couple in good shape) and sent those out.

The Moving Wall is coming to my town in a month and I'll be able to go look at his name (I was born shortly before he left for Viet Nam.)

Thank you for sharing your story Esoterik. It's truly amazing. Thank you for your father's sacrifice. He was obviously a man of honor.
