I thought this deserves a thread, mainly because I was reminded of just why I hate books by a certain author the other day.

So, what books do you hate, and why? I'll start: the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, and here's why: it started off well, but throughout it there was this big "secret" that was kept from the reader. I won't go into too much detail, if any of you are reading it/are going to read it, but let's just say by the end I felt like I was tricked into being preached to.

Also, they had NO plot. Every book was exactly the same. I'm realizing that James Patterson (as I just started another YA book of his) does suspense well, and that's pretty much it. His plots suck, his originality sucks, and his dialogue sucks. The end.

the Twilight series i know thats a controversial position to take these days, but there it is!

two of my favorite authors are Isaac Asimov and William Gibson, so those familiar with both will see what my preferences are... and extrapolate what they aren't!

I thought reading Books 1 and 2 of the Wheel of Time series was like eating a shit sandwich and gave up. A lot of people love it though.

Anything by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci code is probably the worst book I ever read. Ever. Digital Fortress sucked too.

Yeah, a friend of mine in high school said it had the biggest surprise ending EVER.

Turns out that kid was just an idiot, I did not find 1984 all that ground breaking after I was finished.

That makes two of us. I read them when I was younger (at least the first couple), and as I got older I started to realize what literary disasters they are. I'm soooooo tired of hearing about that damn movie.

Anything by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci code is probably the worst book I ever read. Ever. Digital Fortress sucked too.

I'm listening to The Symbol right now on audio book, simply because I promised someone I would. It's okay...certainly not my cup of tea. I keep catching myself daydreaming while the dude is reading.

The thing about 1984 is that when it was written, in 1948, everyone thought that the West was this paragon of virtue, and that everyone in the East were subhuman monsters waiting to take our freedom away. It threw people in the West for a loop, implying that we in the West (Britain in particular) could sink to their level. Reading it in today's context, unfortunately, it doesn't seem all that shocking.

Oh, almost forgot. I listened to the audio book of Twilight and thought it was terrible. Besides the contrived story, the fact that every description of Edward was "perfect" really made me ill. What's perfect? Describe him, don't just say "perfect." I'm really surprised that it even got a publishing contract.

There is a difference between books we hate and books we think suck. I didn't like the Pern series, but I don't think it was bad. It just didn't do anything for me.

Oh I understand, at the time I had just got done with Ender's Game which I thought (and still do) had an ending which I didn't see coming AT ALL. That might change if I read it again, but at the time it was the first great book I had ever really read.

Because I liked The Road I read No Country for Old Men - terrible.

Much as I like 1984, it didn't seem so weighty anymore after reading The Gulag Archipelago.

Ya, I didn't like The Wheel of Time much. I persevered to the end but never picked up another in the series. My wife forced me to read Da Vinci code and I thought it was blah (I was into the religion conspiracy stuff years before that book). Also, the 'Across the Nightingale Floor' by Lian Hearn I thought was sooooo over rated (even though everyone seems to love it). However, my most hated book is:

Hallucinations: or the ill fated peregrinations of Fray Servando.

This book is the biggest load of wank I have ever read. The author just uses this book to show off his command of the English language. Its just total wank. Don't read it!

"Summer of my German Soldier" by Bette Greene; was forced to read this garbage in grade 9. barely worth the paper it was printed on. truly horrible writing.

"Who Has Seen the Wind" by W.O. Mitchell; this was grade 12 i think. you thought the canadian prairies were boring? well just add a little Mitchell and you will be just about ready to kill yourself.

anything by Robert Jordan.
