if i had 25k laying around id buy a second hand humvee, or a dodge diesel

I thought about the Cummins route, but diesel is not terribly common in Rochester. That's the big thing keeping this market from a lot of the Volvos and VWs and such with diesel.

Well I would go used. Even with the discount you will still come out ahead. And I'm guessin its a hard life on vehicles up there. I would recomend a early 2000's Impala. The only drawback being 4doors. Maybe a Monte Carlo? The new Wranglers (JK) are roomy and get a lil better mpg but I personally not a big fan of the styling. But they are very capable. This is actually a harder search to fill than it at first seemed. Unless you wanted a truck, then any small 4 banger would do. Just not as powerful. Maybe (dare I say it) a late 90's 2 door BMW 3 series would fit the bill. Just watch out on maint cost. If your mechanical they are actually not that bad to wrench on but beware if your not. Stupid money for easy repairs.

Unless Chrysler turns it around, I may go the used Impala route. Oh well for it being 4 doors and fun.

I have, however, taken a shining to some of the new Subie's. And they aren't too expensive to start, but appear to be expensive as far as repairs go. OTOH, they seem to be pretty bulletproof with regular maintenance.

That depends on what's being repaired. Somethings are cheaper to repair than other cars; any problems with the AWD drivetrain would be expensive.

Subies are pretty easy to work on too esp the DIY maintenance too; oil nut, belts, spark plugs, air filter, all positioned for easy access, like they should be.

you know, VZ, maybe a Monte Carlo SS? I know it's not RWD, but they are roomy and have good power, especially if you find a 3.8L SC or 5.3L V8 car.
the 3.4L V6 cars are ok, but a little on the pokey side by comparison with the higher level engines.
a couple of year old V8 SS is just about in your price range.

If you buy GM, make sure you invest in a really good test light and the best multimeter you can buy.

I'd look for a new Camaro or Mustang to be honest. Both cars will hold up well past 150,000 miles with abuse. Both are fun cars, and you would likely fit well in both of them. Their newness means you don't have to worry about rust, even if you go used.
