It cocks upon opening the bolt, not the best design.

Almost every bolt action cocks on opening the bolt. Only the Lee-Enfield action cocks the on close, and that is pretty rare. Almost all bolt action weapons for the last half century have used a Mauser type bolt.

Don't forget the U.S. Model of 1917 (re-chambered to .30-06 from the British P14 rifle) also cocks on opening the bolt as well.

Yes, it uses a Mauser type action.

You are correct, I worded that very clumsily. Most rifles do cock on open as you said. What I meant to say is that the Mosin action when opening to cock is very stiff compared to most modern rifles. Not all Mausers cock on open. The earlier models cocked on closing. Also saying that a rifle has a Mauser type bolt is a little misleading. Yes they both use locking lugs but the Mauser uses "controlled round feed" where the Mosin uses a "push feed" system. There are several other differences but I won't harp on that right now. Here's a little vid I found on the cock on open vs cock on close, both being Mauser actions.

The Mosin is a very clumsy action. Durable and reliable for sure, but not the best design, and most agree it was created solely to avoid patent violation and licensing of an existing design.

The Mauser action refers to the model 98 action. While not all Mausers from 100 years ago cock on open the Spanish 1893 Mauser action was just an evolutionary step towards the model 98 action, which most consider to be the pinnacle of bolt action design. The model 98 action quickly became well regarded and was adopted by the US for the 1903, the UK in the P14, and Japan for the Type 35, as well as more and more countries as other actions, such as the Mannlicher, Lebel, and other obscure designs were replaced. The model 98 action became known as the Mauser action for this reason of notoriety. Like when somebody talked about their Jacuzzi you know they are talking about a hot tub, even though Jacuzzi makes and made other things.

What do you guys feel about Mosin-Nagant mods? FPS Russia is editing an upcoming vid where he fires a modded M-N.

Any change that makes a rifle work better for the shooter is a good change. Mod away.

Speaking of modding, I read an article that says that you may as well get a different rifle if you feel the need to do more than a couple hundred dollars in mods.

Any thoughts on this?

Interesting article. For the most part, I'd agree. A GOOD Nagant, with a tight chamber and sharp rifling can benefit a great deal from a trigger job and a decent optic, and will be a fairly tight mid range shooter. Beyond that, it was never designed as a 1000 meter sniper weapon, and there are indeed better choices for that work.

I think all those mods on nagants, like trigger jobs, optics, new stocks, bent bolts, etc, all made sense when you could get an M44 for $69. It was a super value modern rifle at that point. But now with m44s at $240 and 91/30s at $140 all the upgrades don't seem to make dollars and cents.

Hi

First post in this subforum!

I work with a Mosin Nagant fan. The biggest. He's Russian and to my knowledge only owns Mosins. I can get a Molot for $150 when my cards show up, and probably will.. They're cheap to shoot and it's $150-160..

Tribeach, you won't be disappointed with the rifle considering what you have spent and the fact that 7.62x54r ammo is still the least expensive on the market. Enjoy!
