Or, just bid the amount that you are willing to pay right from the start, and you will either win and pay that amount or less, or you will lose, which is fine, since the price is more than you were willing to pay.

I use auctionstealer.com I think it does 10seconds w/o having to pay for the upgraded version.

And some people will say "$10" but then when they see you said "$12" they will change their mind and decide it's worth another $5... so if it's anything non-trivial I always snipe.

Right, but that still doesn't change my premise that if I decide how much I am willing to spend and bid that much, I will only end up paying the amount I am willing to pay or less, or it will sell for more than I wanted to pay.

When there is something I really want and there isn't a gadzillion of them to be found, I always use the Buy-it-now option. I've lost too many things that I've wanted because of the bidders who probably set their alarms to within 2 minutes of the auctions end so they can do this to you!

I've watched some auctions go well above some of the buy-it-now prices; so its not always a bad way to go. Depends how bad you need or want something, and if the set price isn't outrageous.

I have been sniped for less then my full bid price. I let the seller and Ebay Know about it. They had no answer for me & the seller was pissed. This was by $50 or so. Don't get how it was even possible. The worst is when ur sniped by 1 cent.

I have to admit to sniping when the time calls for it. I've lost too many unique items to not be counter-sniping the snipers, just to insure I get the items that I've been carrying the bid on the whole week.

Sometimes, I'll even set up multiple tabs of various amounts, all tab'd to the submit buttons so I just have to hit enter, then I've set up a second laptop to refresh the page every 1 second, and watch and wait. Any sign of bid movements and I have my final rounds of ammunition ready to fire, just in case.

I've had to do this maybe half a dozen times, usually with very old, or very uncommon things that I grew up with as a child. Old books that are long out of print, hallowe'en/christmas decorations, etc. that all have very fond memories, and it takes daily searches looking for these items for months or more before I find one for sale. I despise having to do it, but it's the only way I can can stay at an even playing field with everyone else doing it.

It doesn't make it right, but it does make it fair.

What you need to do is watch it.......Dont bid cause you will start a bidding war..Then in the 5 min of the bid time i do a high MAX bid of what i want to pay... I got the EBAY APP on my I-PHONE so i can bid on the go anywhere/anytime...
