Yes, it's on my list of all time best. And...it's better than the tentacle porn that's part of the same genre and same animation artists repertoire.

I was stunned how impressive it was, visually, for a twenty year-old animated movie. Everything's so slick and detailed and careful. For some reason, I thought it might seem more dated, but no, not at all.
So, this seemed very much in the vein of Neuromancer, which was published... '84 or '85? Does anyone know if that was an influence, or whether the guys in Japan were already doing that kind of stuff?

Neuromancer predates Akira by a few years... Gibson started his Sprawl series in the late 70's with Fragments Of A Hologram Rose... and then moved on from there. I believe that Neuromancer was released in mid 1984...
