Not sure if anyone will find these useful, but I figured I might as well put them up, having taken them

I had a quick play indoors to get to grips with the colours, and set the camera up in front of a medium-dark grey photographic backdrop ('thunder grey' for those playing at home), and took some test pictures.

These are all taken with the torch held stationary - no waving around to smooth out the beam necessary.

Solid colours

The camera (and my eyes) seems to have some difficulty dealing with the blue - there's little tonality left in there.

Mixed Colours

A bit of a mixture of everything:

I sandpapered the inside of a Fenix dildo diffuser, and it now fits nicely on the Quark RGB (and regular Quark, too). The knurling on the Quarks is quite aggressive, so once I managed to force the diffuser on, I gave it some firm twists, and grated some more of the insides off, until it reached a stage I was happy with.

I'm not really sure how useful that diffuser will be on the RGB though, given how smooth the beam is already.

Not terribly artistic, but a bit of playing around with the RGB:

Yeah, still trying to work out how best to make use of the thing photographically, without it being completely gratuitous. Colours aside, though, it's my number one light for general light painting now, just because of that big smooth beam it puts out.

Looks like you are doing pretty good with it to me. Im not real big on flooders. I like a thrower with a good beam diffuser. Tonight I was carrying a 6P in a speedholster with a Malkoff M30 and a Surefire FM34 flip diffuser. PERFECT package. Just lacking a low mode. (I was also carrying my Ti Quark 123x2, Quark Mini AA, Surefire LX2, and Zebralight H60 headlamp. Man am I a freak =)) Metta are you excited for 4sevens new S1800 and S1200?

Who doesn't like ultra-bright lights and throwers?! The S1800 and S1200 look like they'll be pretty special when they arrive. It'll be interesting to see what kind of prices we're talking about for those, given that some of the other manufacturers have now released competing products (e.g. JetBeam). I can only hope that 4Sevens will keep with their super-competitive pricing.

Honestly, though, I don't know that I'd use a light like that at the moment. Mostly, I use the Quarks and a Fenix LD20, all very small lights that fit easily in pockets. If I need a thrower, I'll usually grab a Solarforce L2. I have a dedicated thrower that will outdo the L2, but I rarely take it out, because the head is just a bit too broad for easy pocket carrying.

I have to admit I have been eyeing off another light... the Preon! Specifically, the Preon two-body, two-tailcap kit (and why wouldn't you?).

Tempting...

Just ordered one with the 18650 body - looks like an excellent light for light painting & can't wait to get down a nice drain or tunnel & see what it can do!

Yeah, even if you ignore the colours it's great for light painting - just so smooth. I'll be interested to hear how it performs with the 18650 body, actually.

Did you go for the cool white or neutral white?

Will give you an update once it's arrived!

I ended up going for the cool white - I think from looking at the 4sevens site that they only offer the head only in cool white (see http://www.4sevens....php?cPath=297_358).

No big deal either way though!

Ah, so you bought the head, body tube, and tail individually? Not a bad idea.

I got a dollarstore special ($2) that works as a 3 led flashlight, and a flashing green/red/blue and also all white lantern, all in one. Photos when I'm not being super lazy.

So, I wanted to light the foreground here, but I didn't really feel like using psychotically garish colours today. At least, not in the final image. The good thing about the colours from this light is that they're nice pure primaries, and are useful for isolating areas for manipulation.

I painted the foreground in red, as there was no other red in the scene, then just shifted it orange-ward in Lightroom. Convenience plus!
