Samarui, your thoughts are spot on, however I was talking about inspection programs in general.

New York's program grew from a simple program like you said to keep both car owners and shops in check. However, thanks to the giant smog problem in NYC, Upstate pretty much has footed the bill for those asshats by increasing inspection costs statewide. And plus last I checked it was easier to get a license to operate a service shop in NYS too.

And for the record, I do like 75% of my own work on my Isuzu Rodeo, the rest I take to my friend who is conveniently also named Scott who is a coworker who runs a shop on the side and lets me watch. Though I have not taken the Isuzu to him in like a year and even than that was an alignment. And even then, I tell him whats wrong with the car and what I want done. (I haven't owned the Caravan in years, but it might be the next car I get again)

Oregon like I said has only emissions testing in the Portland Metro area where there was and still kind of is a smog problem. Its a painless process where you only do it when your registration is up and for most cars with OBDII, they check a couple of sensors and thats it. They don't care if you got codes on your car as long as those sensors work.

unfortunately, Skelly, the problem of northern and upstate New York footing the bill for the woes of New York City and Long Island are not just relegated to the automotive side of it.

As I said, the Hudson Valley, NYC and Long Island resident doesn't realize that living in northern and western New York REQUIRES owning a vehicle. There is NO real public transportation and the distances are just too far apart to make that option viable anyways. I agree that components such as brake lines, fuel lines, tanks and the like SHOULD be examined twice a year (in this area), but at a REASONABLE cost to the average motorist, especially considering the cost of replacement once deemed faulty. We should be exacted to the same standards as the rest of New York just due to our differences with them.

maybe I am being provincial, but I experience northern New York on a daily basis.

All inspections are income generators. Plain and simple.

Strongly agree.

Emission testing in Ontario is also a huge money grab. If your car fails (provided you haven't just purchased it) you can pretty much buy your way out of it by means of a "conditional pass".\

And the diesel test is strictly visual.

And there's not even an ODB hookup. Which is nice for my Toyota which requires a fake e-test as it spits a 3' flame out of the exhaust when I downshift. Although, nowadays she spends 75% of her time on the track anyhow.

I had kind of forgotten about the Ontario Emissions thing.
The sillyness of that program and not having to deal with it anymore slightly sways my thoughts on the alberta safety program.

I'll gladly accept a bit of extra diligence on safeties to not have to ever run an E-Test again

So this morning, i finally decide after way too long, that I should get the truck inspected and Alberta plated. I zip over to the registry office to obtain my request for inspection form... which is required (and is bullshit)

computer in Manitoba is down so they can't do the required Provincial registration search and thus, can't provide me with my request form. without it, my tech can not begin his inspection. WTF lol

No inspections at all here, they had emissions testing for awhile but it (several purpose built testing centers) but they are all either shuttered or re purposed now.

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.
