US probes Chevy Cobalt steering complaints

Posted at: 02/02/2010 11:03 AM

Associated Press

Federal regulators have opened an investigation into complaints that power steering systems in the Chevrolet Cobalt can fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there are 1,132 complaints about the Cobalt's electric power steering, including reports of eleven accidents and one injury.

The review covers about 905,000 Cobalts in the model years from 2005 to 2009.

A majority of the complaints have come in the past six months. Some drivers said they couldn't stay in their traffic lane when steering became difficult.

The Cobalt is made by General Motors.

I'll agree, the Cobalt is pretty fail.

problem one with the 05 and 06 Cobalts were the control arm bushings pushing through and clunk. easy fix and repaired outside of warranty as well for nothing.
there was a problem with the steering shaft clunking. all it needed was to be lubricated.
'difficult to keep in lane'.

yeah, right.
whatever.

Chevy: failure is a feature.

whatever.

Is GM's electric steering system a Delphi product or is it in-house?

Blasphemy. Nothing can go wrong on a Cobalt. They're better than a rolls royce and faster than a veyron.

The power steering unit is outsourced on them. I can't for the life of me think of the brand, but it's some ching-chong-cheapo name.

Even Samarui has previous cited the Cobalt does have some issues...

Yeah, thats why I ask. I remember TurboZutek of all people was telling me that Delphi was starting to have its R&D Group in India do designs for all GM platforms.

Every car in the world has a fatal flaw. Every car in the world is good for one thing, where the other isnt. For instance, everything other than a Chevy is good for being reliable and being a good city car. Chevy is good for driving off a cliff and recycling for scrap to be used in the manufacturing of anything thats not a Chevy.

See, now everybody is happy.
