Alright, I have a 1992 Nissan truck. It's 2WD, but here in FL, unless you're looking for a mud pit, you really don't need 4WD. You do still need good tires.

Most of the terrain here is sandy. There's some mud, but unless I'm trying to get stuck, I won't. No rocks to really speak of, but there are some large-ish roots.

What I'm looking for is something that won't break the budget but will get me around doing RE and geocaching. I've been perusing craigslist and the such and haven't found anything that screams at me. I think I'd rather go new anyway.

The stock tire size is 235/75 15. Larger is fine, but I don't have the clearance up front for much more.

Let me know what's actually good out there. I don't want to cheap out and be disappointed, but I don't really want to spend more than about $350 for the tires themselves.

Don't get Dakota AT's. They look very similar to the BFG AT's but they ride like shit & squeal at every stop & launch. You can feel the difference between good & cheep tires.

you should be able to find some mud terrains around that price similar to the BFGs mud terrain

a guy i know here gets these off-brand tires called "Sport Kings"... they're a wickedly tough tire and excellent in the mud/snow. I think they are an off Hankook brand.

Federal makes a decent MT that's pretty cheap. I would really cheap out and just get 2 serious MT for the rear and some generic AT on the front. But I'm odd.

For 2wd that makes sense.

The Federal looks nice. I was working on my truck all day so I didn't get a chance to call the shops around here to see who carries Federals and get some pricing.

Looks like a pretty solid tire, probably more capable than I am.

The next mod after a lift is an LSD rear. I just have to happen across one at the junkyard. I may get a 4x4 rear end so I can get some more lift.

samurai's right, i had those on my 4runner originally and they were amazing.

For the money, can't beat the Pro Comp's. I got a cheap set of AT's for the Dodge, not expecting to do much off road with it, but one trip to the desert and one to Colorado, and 6 months later the sidewall finally gave out where it got a bunch of cuts. I never had that problem with a namebrand tire and a half dozen trips into no-man's land. I got a deal from my supplier on the no name's at $100 each for a 285/75 R16. Not a bad price, but not worth $5 apiece if they don't hold air. They also take cactus needles to the sidewall very easily, A real tire usually keeps that 1/4 inch shit out.

Yeah, I've been looking, and I really think I need to put money into the tires. I think I'll get some used A/Ts for now and save up for something nice in a few months. I really need to get rid of my open diff before I go anywhere off road anyway.

I really like the look of Federal Couragia M/Ts. Unless I find some bad long term reviews of them, I'll probably get them.

Ive got a set of Dunlop Mud rovers on my 4 runner. Cheap all terrain tires and they do pretty damn well if you ever want to leave the pavement. Sams club carries them. I had them on my old rig too, 32 11.50s were 101 bucks apiece, not bad for MTs

I ended up with some used Michelin M+S tires. They're not bad, but I think they'll make me appreciate good tires when I get them.

I gotta go with Junkyard here. I put the best tires I can afford on my 4x4's. I don't care how cheap it was if I have to walk out of the boonies.

With all the wheelin' we do, I have never been a fan of ProComps. They are inexpensive compared to others, but they donut (ie lose shape) much easier than the other brands. Firestone/Bridgestone never really seemed to 'stick'. I can go on about others (Super Swamper, Truxus, Mickey Thompsons, Dunlap etc), but if cost is an issue, I always found BFG ATs to have the best bang for the buck, and with 3 ply side walls they are more than enough for 'light' wheelers.

I to am a BFG AT fan. But they are a problem in mud. They don't self clean very well. Other then that... I love em.

Yeah, after clogging my tires in my back yard and having a no traction situation, I know I need something that self cleans better. I still think I'd like a mud tire as opposed to an all terrain, but right now, I'm lucky to have been able to afford the M+S tires. I needed to put the truck to work faster than I thought, so cheapies it was. I'll upgrade soon enough. These tires are already paying for themselves, though, because I can now make lumber yard and dump trips myself. Before, I'd have to pay for gas to have my dad come over with his Ridgeline. Now I can haul my own for practically nothing.

AT's clean dirt out very well, but not mud, not at all. But yeah, if you got the money, the BFG or Wrangler MT's. If you see more off road than street, Interco is the way to go. I have to drive over 1000 miles just to get to the rocks. I need a tire that will last on the street there and back.

Right. That's why they are ATs not MTs.

Neither of these are cheap, but as mentioned, cheap is expensive if you’re always getting stuck. Also mentioned, in FL yur gonna want good rain and sand, but don’t think any tires will help much in the sand w/2w drive.

Anyway – My Truxus MTs (Interco) wore out. They were awful in the rain (until I siped them), but I loved them off road. When I went to replace them they weren’t available cause their Ohio plant closed.

GoodYear just came out with their Kevlar, but few reviews on them – took a chance & got em. So far, very pleased! Quite on road as street tires, MUCH better in the rain than the Interco, and so far impressed off road as well – very sticky on rock (even when wet), seem to be OK in mud (reviews say they don’t clean out, but didn’t have problem), and no real experience in sand (though one review says good).
Anyway, just in case anyone is on the fence.
