I've just done the recall on a few 2010 Vibes... instead of replacing the accelerator pedal assembly, we have to measure clearances with feeler gauges, and install a shim in the pedal. I can see things going wrong here, and then Toyota blaming technicians. The shim is only held in by spring pressure...

And that's if the pedal assembly is even the problem.

I thought they were supposed to replace the whole accelerator pedal? At least that's what the news was saying about a week or so ago. Figures they'll cheap out on the repair so it has to be done again, at the customer's expense.

i still think it's a software issue. there are reports of the car taking off when the driver isnt even touching the gas pedal. this shim nonsense is just toyota passing the buck on to the technician, like you said.

this is what pisses me off about computerized automobiles. PCs have been unstable for years, it was only a matter of time before PCthink made its way into automobile computers. Only when an ECM crashes, your car crashes and people die. its high time automakers got back to basics with computerized vehicle management. there is NO reason a toyota brake servo should be computer controlled FFS. stick the goddamn vacuum line into the intake like you always did and be done with it.

The brake servo was a separate issue, they aren't computer controlled. The recall involves installing a throttle body spacer with a relocated vacuum port.

this is the brake problem i was referring to bandi, a software issue;
http://www.cnn.com...plaints/index.html
i stand corrected as this affects regen braking and cant be controlled manually

the broader point im making is that increasing the complexity of computer systems on a car will also increase failure points and automakers should be focusing on computerizing those functions that can't be managed any other way.
