| | | Our former cat, Sophie, who has since run off, would spend most of the day outside during warm weather. It didn't matter if we tried to keep her in, she'd dash out the door when our guard was down. We eventually just gave in and let her go out. She'd lounge on the patio or the pool deck, and never stray too far from home. But she'd also bring us presents. Animal presents. My favorite was when we were eating dinner on the patio and she had a mouse in her mouth. It was still alive, and when she reached us she bit down hard and we could hear the bones crunching. Usually moles were her preferred target. Sometimes she'd bring them inside and leave them on the kitchen floor for us. A piece here, a piece there, guts and blood between. She had killed at least a dozen moles, several mice, a few birds and at least one baby rabbit, all left proudly for us. Cute, cuddly, cold blooded killers. I miss having a cat.
