I was reading Under the Dome (Stephen King), but at about a third of the way in, I think I've had enough. It's not a bad book, but I just can't get in the mood for the whole bad people doing bad things and the good people having to persevere, and so on.

So it's basically the stand but not as epic?

It's not at all epic. It's kind of a Lord of the Flies thing (in fact he even makes specific reference) - what happens when a little town is completely cut off from the rest of the world.

Strangely, I found it a bit manipulative. The town is cut off, and there's already trouble with a bunch of kids being violent. First thing that happens is the kids are deputised and told to use whatever force they have to. There were a few little things like that to crank up the tension. Seemed a bit heavy-handed.

But, it's a bit like complaining there are too many car chase scenes in an action movie. Anyway, I just don't think it's one of his best.

The Lincoln book was kind of cool. I finished it last night.

I liked the writer's use of the slavery as a tool for evil vampires, and the Civil War as more than just "The North and the South".

I don't read particularly fast, but I have a 90-minute bus ride to work every morning. As long as I don't get motion sickness, I read the whole way.

Now reading: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by HP Lovecraft.

I usually have 3 to 5 books going at once, you caught me on a good day when I finished two books, that one and and "Nixonland". About...you guessed it, the presidency and life of Richard Nixon.

Always been a voracious reader.

I have a TV, I just prefer not to use it.

In my case, the reason books go so fast is that I tend not to think of the length of the book. I've never found the pages daunting. Some people dread every page and think of it as an ordeal. I never even look at the number of pages, only to remember my place, I don't use bookmarks. It's a nice memory exercise.

That and I can read like 500 words per minute and retain 95 percent of the information.

You also might want to try etext too, they go faster than paper books. I have to keep my collection in etext because I have too many books, they'd fill my house.
