Also, Metawaffle, how long were the exposures in those photos?

Those were all thirty seconds, I think. Maybe f/8? ISO200, definitely. I'll take something specifically to show how they perform, exposure-wise.

Any Americans have this one? It's kind of a big spud but takes c cells (why not d's..?) which seems like a good feature when out and about.

This light looks intriguing indeed....

Have you by any chance been to Costco lately? They have, I believe it is a 25 million candlewatt light that is ridiculously over sized....it looks like it weighs about 20lbs. I just about burst out laughing when I first saw it.

I got a TK40 for Christmas!

I actually don't have a membership, so no. I did however find the TK40 cheap on amazon and will be ordering it with a headlamp

Not the best pic but here it is.....to give you an idea of scale the reflector has a diameter of almost a foot.

I think that's the one that runs around 2200 lumens.

That is definitely believable. It probably throws like a canon too but in terms of size it is pretty much useless for exploring. Surprisingly though it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be.

Making those smaller requires expensive batteries. Take a look at the Stanley HID spotlight, it's a bit more manageable. Not a bit of wasted space in that thing, and it's very bright. The color temperature is too high though; and it's still crippled by the SLA. Around the $150 range you get mag-lite size HID flashlights that weight about six pounds and give 2000 lumens for about 2 hours.

Sounds like a decent light for the price. I googled it but could only find links for the stanley hand canon...which claims to output 4,200 lumens. I somehow doubt that's accurate.

4200 is a bald lie for the stanley HID, but you can expect 2200 kumens or so out the front at 35 watts. The 25w "low" setting is around 1500L. Some HID spotlights run at 55w, and so are almost twice a bright. These are real, measured lumens, not bs ones. A few people go crazy with 100w and so on; just silly portable power.

Some at hidcountry.com aren't bad, supposedly. I've not used them, and they are budget china products. candle power forums seems middling about the stuff there. Try to get a cct near 5000.

Is it normal for the Quark to get so hot?! I was sitting here at the computer with the flashlight in my lap, and absentmindedly left it turned on to maximum for a few minutes. Then I remembered and went to turn it off, and the whole flashlight felt pretty hot. Maybe this is normal for all high-end lights? I don't know; my Fenix and my Quark are my first "good" lights. I know the Fenix TK40 has a warning symbol on it, but this Quark is far less powerful. It's just a little 2xAA light. It's actually slightly smaller than the 2xAA Maglite!

I do like the rubber handgrip that came with it. I can see how that could be useful in a place like a drain full of water where there's no surface to rest objects on. It can be hard to fumble with a backpack zipper and get things out of your bag when there's a torch in your hand. Also suspect that the momentary switch and super low mode might work well for certain other types of locations. ;)
