I was watching Axe Men on Discovery Channel and saw the guy who does the swamp logging (Not the fat guy and his son, the Cajun) wearing a hardhat with what looked like a flood light attached to it with a cable that ran to a battery pack. So are these amazing things commercially available? and if not what would be involved in making one? I cant for the life of me find a video to get a screen cap but I think it was in Season 3 episode 8(?) "Assault By Air"

It was a miners headlamp that he was wearing. Attaches to a hardhat and has a remote battery pack - usually worn on the belt of the user or the back of the hardhat. A quick google search didn't turn up many hits - but you should be able to find a mining supplier somewhere on the net to buy one.

You can build one on the cheap. Do this:

1) Buy a flashlight you like. Take the front off (with the bulb/LED)
2) Build a battery pack. Match voltages with the batteries the light takes, but use more batteries. If I did this with my Quark (takes 2 AAs, is rated up to 4.2v), then I'd make a 3-4 volt battery pack. This would be a few parallel sets of 3 NiMH batteries in series (3 * 1.2v = 3.6v).
3) Wire the battery pack to the flashlight head, waterproofly. Get creative with sealing compound and other oddments (Cut a PVC T-junction across the long side and add padding, put the flashlight in the tube you have left). You'll want a switch somewhere.
4) Test it before you use it as a primary light.
