A friend's looking at a 2000 VW Jetta TDI.

Any known issues, good points, etc.

What've you got for me?

Oh and it's got 180,000 km.

How much?

timing belt and water pump. apart from early mk4's liking to eat tail light bulbs, TDI's are pretty much trouble free. look at bandi's.

At 180k that engine is barely broken in.

My 2003 Jetta TDI has 366,000km on it.
The only complaint I really have about it is the heated seats - the driver burns, and the passenger doesn't work. Volkswagen is supposed to fix it on recall next time it's in, however. I've been really happy with it since I got it in August 09.

bandi's 2000 TDI Beetle wins though, with 600,000km on it.

If only they made a RWD variant, I'd trade my car in for it in a heartbeat.

the only Vee-Dubs that had my heart were the old air-cooled Beetles and Type III's as well as the Corrado.

doesn't 6k seem a bit too much, though, especially considering the year?

It's definitely the high end of the scale, but that's super low mileage for a TDI.

fair enough.
i was looking at a Beetle Turbo last night before the monsoon set in.
It was an 06 or 07 Beetle Turbo... i know nothing about the car. It has 18" wheels on it, 5 speed, a Porsche 'turbo' emblem on the hatch, different seats than the new beetles I've seen and a fat steering wheel.
it was locked, so I didn't get inside.
I was thinking it would be fun to have as a work car... thoughts?

He decided against it.

It required a pump, belt, rubber, and new brakes all around, and a couple more things.

He called the dealership back and offered 5, they flat out said no. They had it at 8. way too much.

your friend was smart to walk away... you're right. 8 is too fucking much with the mileage, even with the diesel.

Sounds like it may have been a Turbo S but they didn't have them in the "new" ('05-up) body style... I'm pretty sure the only option for those is the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder, which is a peppy little mill, but not quite as fun as the 1.8T.

The Turbo S is a pretty desirable car, they were never available in Canada
