Positioning lights: tripods or what?

Whenever I shoot drains, I get whoever I'm exploring with to hold lights for me. But it really pisses them off...

So my total n00b question is: how do you position lights in a drain? Can I just buy some cheap, small tripod (like http://www.amazon....ag_stp_st_edpp_url) and tape the light on there? Do people do this? Or is there some other solution I'm missing?

I've contemplated tripods, and I think that's probably worth a try. I usually get someone to hold them, though

Its not too bright, and you need a diffuser over it to avoid harsh reflector lines, But i can't find anything else similar to this. anywhere.

Pretty much useless for flood as well, not overly bright (seems to be a manufacturer theme) but, you can find them on sale sometimes for 10 bucks a pop, it does work, and well, its not too hard to "replace" the led with something a tad brighter.

# Bulbs: 1.25W last 100,000 hrs
# Brightness: 40 Lumens
# Run time: 90 hrs
# Requires 3, 6 or 9 AA batteries

I'm glad I'm not the only one... With my stance on the matter, I ethically can't ask someone else to hold my lights because I know how bad it sucks and hate it so much myself. I swear I don't have stock in this company, but I've have good luck with these due to their hex bolt styled ends that allow you to stick them at odd angles and in crevasses and curved surfaces (like the side of a drain pipe above the flow):

I had three of these...not bright at all and the battery compartment is where its likely to get wet. Not recommended!

As of a couple months ago when I bought them, they weren't on the internet really. I think they might be newish. I found them at Home Depot.

Yah, I still don't even see it on Commercial Electric's website. They have similar ones, but they appear plastic and have a hook instead of the hex bolt ends. Oddly the top google search result points to my original thread on the lights in this board. I can't find it searching Home Depots site either. But, two HD's here had them in stock. They're oddly elusive.

Well I will go check out my local Home Depot but I am guessing they won't have them....things are a little bit different in Canada.

They are neat because the magnets allow you to place them on ladders, bolts hanging from ropes, etc. but they are not very bright nor reliable. The heads of both mine and optechs fall off quite frequently.

stick LED's are on sale at crappy tire, both the 19led and the 36 (something like that) are $14.99. The 19 led one looks more robust, but I was thinking of trying both since my fluro is on its last legs

Just whipped this up with a broken tripod. 1st a foot fell off, fixed with a screw & some goop. Then the mount pin fell out. So now I made it into my light mount. I used the lil finger dealy that comes with ur quark & mounted it. Cheap n easy. Stands about 48" fully extended & swivel & tilt still works fine. Very easy to position. Also Zip ties or duck tape would work well to mount a light.

Easily breaks down & compact so it doesn't take up too much space in ur pack.
