Its time to upgrade my phone, and am looking at replacing my Storm with a Droid. One of the things that appeal to me is the Google Voice Application, and utilizing it for free calls and text messaging. I just requested my invite for the service, and was wondering if anyone else has it, or how long it took them to receive an invite.

I'm considering switching to a Droid too. Please let me know what you think of it after you have one and use it. I have the AT&T HTC FUZE right now and I like it, but all the new phones have bigger screens and a thinner profile.

Speaking of phones, does anyone know what specifically cell providers use to tell if the phone is a smartphone or not? I'm just looking for some basic terminology as a starting point on my research.

My ultimate goal is to figure out how to make a smartphone not appear as a smart phone when activating it so that the cell provider (Verizon) doesn't add a mandatory data plan. I don't need/want a full-time data plan, just to be able to use wi-fi. Even better if I can make it appear as something like a motorola razr or something.

All phones are different, just curious if there's any kind of industry standard code/number/protocol/etc for a provider to know what phone you have and what it can support (especially if you purchase the phone yourself).

Edit: Probably one of these eh? http://www.phonesc...ry/term.php?gid=45
