This is disconcerting. The bill originally said they wanted the black boxes in cars to record 75 seconds of data, now it's been changed to allow the NTSB to determine how much data this box will record in a car.

I'm happier that the NTSB is making the determination instead of a senate committee.

I have one in my car and many other cars have them too ... I actually see it as a plus side in case some fuckwit rearends me or a "I'm not @fault" accident with no witnesses...

It requires direct interface with the device ... if the new ones can be checked on remotely well then, you'll see me only purchasing older vehicles in the future.

But I probably will stop speeding all together in car to keep my record clean once I've got a motorcycle anyways ... don't need to make myself a target unless intentionally .

My problem with this Skelly is the NTSB could bend to the will of the lobbyists from the insurance industry, the auto industry and the auto loan industry, which may let the recording go longer than 75 seconds and might add the (insert sarcasm) wonderful (/sarcasm) RFID chip or some kind of remote downloading device that would let them do whatever they want to your car remotely and detect when and if you void your warranty or if you don't pay your car payment, with that, they might be able to do something to your car without you knowing about it.

This is what bothers me about the whole recording thing and the black box in general.

The NTSB is mostly research and investigators; they tend to say FUCK OFF to outside interests. Hell, they even had a problem when the FBI wanted to be primary lead on TWA 800.

The only thing I can see is the car manufacturers wanting maybe keeping the limit short so they don't have to put in complicated systems linked to the ECU.

I had mentioned this in an another thread pertaining to Toyota's acceleration/electronics problems, but feel that it bears pertinence in this thread: General Motors installed these 'black boxes' in many cars early this decade. Everything from the Corvette to the Cavalier and Silverado had black boxes recording data from the car. Keying through the VIN, GM was able to get real world data from these cars, data that could not be duplicated on a test track or in other staged arenas. The downside was that none of the customers that bought the 'boxed' cars, were told about the boxes or data collection.
Owners were furious!

North Americans don't like being spied on.

The pictured ECU in that article is an SIR module. So now your airbags are spying on you, too.
