Might be wise to avoid exploring north Pickering these days...

PICKERING -- Pickering fire crews battled a "suspicious" blaze at an abandoned house on airport lands near Brougham at around 9 a.m. on Thursday. June 3, 2010

Jun 03, 2010 - 11:08 AM

BROUGHAM -- A suspicious fire in an abandoned house on North Road, near Hwy. 7, destroyed the structure Thursday morning.

Transport Canada, in charge of the federal airport lands, has arranged regular security patrols for the abandoned homes, and it was security personnel who discovered the blaze at about 9 a.m.

"We are treating the fire as suspicious," said Pickering Platoon Chief Geoff Nicholson.

He added it appeared the fire started on the porch of the building and by the time fire crews arrived the house was fully engulfed by the flames.

There was no hydro to the building. Chief Nicholson said the fire did $150,000 damage.

Fire prevention officers are investigating.

The road was closed north of Hwy. 7 as fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

This is second fire in an abandoned home in Pickering this week. On Wednesday a vacant building on Dunfair road, near Dunbarton High School, burned.

Damn, i havent been anywhere on the airport lands yet. Looks like anyone will have to be wary of patrols.

Thinking about it now...one of the houses we stopped at during the durham meet had a fire set in the (laundry cupboard?) earlier in the day after we got there. We could actually still smell the remnants of the fire when we went inside. Right when we were about to leave security was out front and said something about two arrests being made at that house earlier in the day. Hopefully it was them and they caught the fucker/fuckers...
