lee seems like the type of guy to do that kind of thing, he loved that in his first years at chrysler he drew no salary, because he didnt need it (ford payed him a 5 year severance) he said en enjoyed fucking with henry ford jr, knowing ford was paying the chrysler CEO salary
| Yup...Well, if you read about the stupidity that went on at Ford during his tenure, you can see why he was happy to work anywhere for basically free as long as he was able to get a functioning management team. That was Iaccoa's biggest pet peeve with Ford; and I think the problem is still there but not as bad. Henry Ford II was so BLIND he could not see the potential in what Iaccola then called the MaxiVan concept. The data was there showing that car buyers were interested such a vehicle. But nope, Henry Ford II said the future was still in station wagons and all the people below him were Yes men (because if Henry Ford II said it, it must be right!) So Iaccola packed up his desk at Ford, drove over to Highland Park and was given the golden ticket. Come to think of it, Ford sold the Taurus/Sable Wagon for quite some time, even along side the Aerostar. But Iaccola dropped EVERY station wagon in the Mopar lineup. And I have the same pet peeve too about management! You need a functioning management team who will tell you if you are going the wrong way.

| it was a design study in 1975 called Project Carousel. It went through four design stages, one of which became the "Cruising Wagon" package available on the Pinto and Econoline van. Henry the Deuce did not buy into the idea of a garage-able van. Also, there were sooooooo many interior tensions over the hiring of Bunkie Knudsen over Iacocca; Iacocca had had too many successes at the expense of Fords' yes men... The Mustang II was the last one, the final bone in the throat. The firing of Lee Iacocca would be one of the many blunders that would damn near bring Ford to extinction in 1978.

| | | Posted by nostra-YOUPPI! skelly, i dont know if you have read lee's autobio from around 1984 fascinating stuff, too bad its before the AMC buyout. but everything your saying is in there. ford when they finally got around to a mini van built the aerostar which basically shared a lot of components with the ranger. i myself would like to own a family truckster
| Ford continuously missed the boat with the minivan market. They introduced the Aerostar on the Ranger chassis, but in a class with the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari which were far more capable and rugged. Then they tried with the Windstar/Freestar which were notorious failures. Rack failures, weak engine choices, weak transmissions... Car & Driver had once suggested that Ford should've just stuck a blue oval on the Mazda MPV and been done with. In the case of the Mercury Villager minivan, it was nothing more than a rebadged Nissan Quest. What's ironic is that Ford was soundly pummeled when they decided to drop the Focus wagon and the Freestyle/Taurus X wagons in favor of the much hated and slow selling Ford Flex. even my beloved GM almost missed the boat on the minivan market after the failure of the Lumina APV, Pontiac TranSport and Oldsmobile Silhouette. They sold, but just because of having three divisions' volume. It wasn't until the redesign of the Venture/Uplander that they got it right. Unfortunately, Chrysler is KING of the minivan market.
